Located at Waione Street, at the edge of Petone’s expansive sandy beach, Small Batch stands as a testament to the golden era of Jackson Street’s cafes in the nineties and early noughties. It is, as far as I’m concerned, the last of Petone’s truly great cafes from that vibrant period. Small Batch exudes an authentic and easy-going vibe, embodying the indigenous charm that once defined the area’s cafĆ© culture. It’s the only place left where you can sit and genuinely feel it belongs to Petone.

The allure of Small Batch lies not only in its atmosphere but also in its offerings. Their coffee is second to none, crafted with a variety of brewing methods including espresso, filter, cold brew, and drip. The beans are roasted nearby at the old Unilever factory, ensuring a local touch that enhances the flavor and experience. The cabinet food is equally remarkable, complemented by daily fresh baking and a thoughtfully curated seasonal menu.

For those who cherish quality time over a cup of exceptional coffee, Small Batch is a sanctuary. And once you’ve indulged in this last bastion of Petone’s cafĆ© culture, you can take a leisurely stroll along Petone’s long beach, just a stone’s throw away.

Despite being off the main Jackson Street, Small Batch is easy to find and conveniently accessible. With the city council’s recent introduction of parking meters on Jackson Street, its location becomes even more appealing. Here, you can enjoy the rich legacy of Petone’s cafĆ© scene without the hassle of parking fees, making it a perfect destination for locals and...

We once were fervent fans of Go Bang Espresso when it was a staple of Jackson Street and have long lamented the lack of quality food since it closed, until now!

I don't know why it took us so long to come here but the food is reminiscent of the offering we used to enjoy at Go Bang! The hash stack is probably the best in Petone, with crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside potato cake, perfectly poached eggs and your choice of toppings.

The cabinet offering is also delicious and appropriate for those with dietary restrictions. I had the vegan brownie and it was once of the best brownies I've had!

The staff are always welcoming, friendly and attentive. This is definitely a...

Good coffee, good scones, good atmosphere!!

That's what i wrote a year ago. It used to be one of our favorites in the Petone area but we are changing our minds - the coffee is still good but the food is indeed cooked in "Small batches": if you want a scone for morning tea, forget it - there won't be any left. Sometimes they don't last much past 900am and there are never any ready to replace those sold. The staff have become too cruisy too. All in all, sad to see it slide downhill. Sad for the owners too - potential turnover being...

How cool is this place!? An unexpected delight near the end (or the beginning) of Waioni St! Aweaome staff, fun, funky decor, plenty of comfy seating inside & out, a great range of tasty treats, some nifty pop-art t-shirt merch, and, of course, really, really good coffee. Well worth the u-turn. šŸ¤—šŸ˜‹ā˜•ļøšŸ«–šŸ°šŸ§šŸ½šŸ„Æ

Went in for WOAP 2020 burger and (being a coffee roastery) a humble latte. Beautifully made coffee, you can taste the freshness of the beans. The burger was vegan and would wipe the floor with traditionals. Innovative use of onion bhajis and beetrool relish. Definitely going back for more. Yum!!
