I would like to share an unfortunate experience I had yesterday at the McDonald’s in New Lynn. I went there for dinner and ordered a coffee and two sandwiches, requesting table service.
It quickly became clear that I was being treated differently—possibly because I am an immigrant or because I am Black. The woman who took my order refused to bring it to my table, even though I had requested that service. She fulfilled other customers’ orders before mine and then, from a distance, gestured for me to get up and collect my coffee myself.
I have no problem picking up my order at the counter, but it was the way she prepared the coffee and the look in her eyes that made the situation painful. There was a clear sense of disdain, and I could feel the rejection and disrespect in her actions.
Throughout the experience, I kept speaking to myself, trying to remain calm and understand what might have caused her behavior. Perhaps she was extremely tired, or maybe someone had been unkind to her earlier. Maybe she wished she were somewhere else, or perhaps she was going through something difficult at home or in her relationships. I truly tried to feel empathy for her, despite the deep pain of what felt like discrimination.
Whatever the reason, the feeling of being dismissed or looked down upon is something that stays with you—it touches the soul. And I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone. In the end, we are all human beings. Whether we are customers or staff, managers or employees, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the respect we owe one another simply for being human.

Read moreIt just seems that there weren't enough staff and the order system is annoying.
Our problems started when ordering - we ordered through the self-service then when checking our receipt noticed we'd been over charged. Turns out the in-store specials prices are only if you order over the counter, but this wasn't obviously stated anywhere. It took quite a while for this to get fixed. The kids wanted dessert afterwards, so tried the self-service again - it didn't have all options. So we queued for counter service. The guy in front of us ended up calling out to staff politely that he was waiting - he'd been standing there a good 5 min without even acknowledgement. Eventually we were served. Then there was the bathroom drama. You have to ask for a key and a staff member unlocks the toilets. Not great if you have kids that really need to go. My little one ended up vomitting ice cream outside the entrance to the toilets. When staff eventually came with the key they just stepped over the vomit - we watched two staff members step over it twice each. My husband ended up moving a "wet floor" sign next to it as we didn't want anyone to slip. A birthday dinner for a child ended up with just too many dramas. We...
