Red Mountain BBQ buffet 红山自助烤肉 — Restaurant in Whau

Decided to pop in as we hadn’t tried this place yet, we are big hot pot fans. Often wondered why it was so quiet!

First of all, this place is not cheap - food is good quality, not exceptional, but you are paying a lot for it! The broth is a $20 starting point, and the cheapest beef option is around $14, with very small quantities offered - would only just cover two people. No combo platters here either, so the total adds up quite fast, especially with the small starters on top. They also charge for access for their very basic sauce bar, and it’s also per person.

If you aren’t a fan of hot food, I wouldn’t go near the mild option broth, it’s nuclear levels of hot! Way hotter than the mild of other hotpot places. Tried the normal mushroom broth, was very weakly flavoured so disappointing. Vegetable platter was mostly lettuce, but was impressed with their mushroom platter and delicious vinegar mushroom starter.

Very intermittent service, was mostly ignored but very nice servers otherwise, they just seemed to be busy in a mostly empty restaurant . Didn’t get our meat options until the very end of the meal, which meant we spent most of the meal eating vegetables and tofu, so the broth didn’t have a chance to get any meat flavouring.

$110 later for two people (no drinks were purchased either) I wouldn’t go back again. Nice, but not worth the money.

Waste of money!!! Went in and most of the hot food were stale and taste like it’s been sitting out there for days. Felt dirty and unhygienic, not even worth the money when you don’t have much of a selection to choose from. Waste of time tbh and not worth the hype it was getting from TikTok! Also shocking how one waitress and the receptionist guy literally stood where we were eating and watching us while they talk in their language or whatever, nobody wants to be watched or seemed to be rushed to hurry up and leave making my family feel uncomfortable and not welcomed after already...

The customer service by all staff, including those clearing tables, was lovely. It's worth the deal. Saturday night is very busy, and the isles are very small to manuver around, and at times, we waited for things to be replenished. One cooking plate is not enough for 6 people. It took an hour to cook all of our food and by then we had filled up on the cooked foods but ate our food so we didn't waste it. It's so worth the money for dinner, though. Good selection.
