Absolutely one of my favorite places in Oslo and easily my personal discovery of the year. Bønder i Byen in Grünerløkka combines everything I love in a café: cozy atmosphere, flavorful food, and a warm, welcoming vibe. The interior feels both rustic and modern, with lots of natural light and thoughtful details that make the space feel calm and homey. It’s the kind of place where you instantly relax.
I’ve tried several dishes here, and they’ve all been consistently good. The chicken dish in particular is juicy, well-seasoned, and really satisfying. Portions are generous, and you can tell they care about quality both in ingredients and presentation.
The staff is friendly and attentive, and service always feels smooth without being rushed. Whether you come alone with a book, or with friends for a slow brunch this place always delivers.
Highly recommend if you’re looking for real food, cozy surroundings, and a spot that truly feels like a local gem rather than a tourist trap. Can’t wait...

We came after several people recommended this restaurant for authentic Norwegian food such as Whale 🐋 Luna greeted us, seated us and took care of us. Though they didn't have whale meat, Luna's effervescent personality made up for it.
We ordered what Luna recommended... Pork Neck and Knuckles which as absolutely delicious. It was served over a bed of house slaw of sorts, all with great flavor. We also ordered the Veal which was very mild in flavor. With a bit more gravy, the flavor came through.
Even mediocre food tastes good with good service, but when delicious food is paired with excellent service, the pairing us better than with a good bottle of wine. Luna made the meal special. Came for the food, stayed for the servic. Fantastic meal.
Dessert was Tjukkmela Pudding and Strawberry Soup with Crispy Oats, a traditional Norwegian cultured milk...
Read moreTasty food in a hip area of Oslo. The food is modern Norwegian/bistro style, with a menu inspired by seasonal local ingredients and traditional dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed and warm, so it’s a good pick if you want to try local food that’s neither too casual or upscale.
The food was tasty and decent value for the are. The staff was friendly but unfortunately very inattentive - we waited for 20min after finishing our meal for someone to come and ask about dessert, then decided to give up after another 10min without seeing the menu. No big loss for us - Harald’s Vaffel around the corner serves excellent ice cream.
Would come back, but maybe outside peak...
