Japanese Dining Sato falls far short of authentic cuisine with most dishes disappointing or outright terrible. We found most of our dishes to be subpar or downright horrible, especially the so-called "ramen".
Karaage 2/5 The fried chicken pieces were overly large for a starter dish, making it nearly impossible to handle them with chopsticks. The chicken itself tasted dry and rubbery, while the batter was a far cry from the flavorful, crispy karaage we were expecting. The accompanying dip was a sour overload of mayo, ketchup, and too much rice vinegar.
Yakitori 2/5 Once again, the chicken pieces were too large, and this time they were pan fried and coated in teriyaki sauce, instead of grilled on skewers. It was acceptable in terms of taste, but those giant chicken pieces didn't work as well.
Gyoza 🥟 3/5 The gyoza were acceptable, with a strong ginger flavor. However, the use of pre-made gyoza skins is a major letdown as the consitency is wrong.
Frog legs 3/5 Frog legs was just about what we expected, tossed in flour and deep fried. It tasted like a mix of chicken and fish and was good with the sweet chilli sauce on the side.
Katsu curry 3/5 The katsu curry was edible, with a nicely fried pork cutlet and standard Japanese curry sauce made from ready-made curry blocks. However, the chef's addition of random vegetables - including pieces of pineapple, broccoli, celery, Japanese shimeji mushrooms, and tomatoes - felt out of place and confusing.
Tonkotsu ramen 1/5 Calling this dish "tonkotsu ramen" is an insult, as the broth tasted nothing like it should. Instead, it had a flavor more akin to clam chowder, thanks to the chef adding some kind of milk product to imitate the white broth that comes from boiling pork bone for hours. The overcooked ramen noodles were soggy and soft, and the braised pork belly (chashu) was non existent, as the chef had just boiled pieces of pork cutlet, which resulted in no flavor and rubbery texture. The vegetables on top seemed randomly selected, making this dish taste out of place.
Karaage ramen 1/5 The broth and noodles in the Karaage Ramen were similar to the Tonkotsu Ramen, with milk added to the broth for no discernible reason. The broth tasted bad, and the noodles were overcooked, topped with a random assortment of vegetables and the same terrible karaage from the starter dish.
In conclusion, we recommend staying away from the ramen dishes at Japanese Dining Sato. While the portions are generous, the food lacks flavor and authenticity, making for an underwhelming...
Read moreI have a tradition of tasting japanese cuisine in every city/country I travel to and I've got to say this was the most disappointing experience so far.
Gyoza 4 dumplings filled with corn?? And pees?? + a sauce on the side made with dark soy sauce and gojuchang, which is completely out of place.
Edamame Too salty and heavily overcooked
Tonkotsu ramen This was my breaking point, as this thing that was served could not be called a ramen in any way, shape or form. A strange white soup, which was made neither with pork nor chicken bones, to which the person that made it added coconut milk in order to make it look like a creamy broth you usually get by boiling pork/chicken bones for a long time. The noddles were soft and overcooked and the boiled meat and randomly selected vegetables served no purpose whatsoever.
The so called yasai udon was a bowl of slightly warmed up water that someone poured a teaspoon of soy sauce into and topped with raw mushrooms and cabbage. The tofu was taken right out of the box and cut into 3 huge pieces. The noodles, again, soggy and overcooked. Generally, a bowl of water poured straight from a pot of cooking mushrooms and served with raw...
Read moreThe food was a massive let down. Consistency was poor, where things were wet and soft when it should be crispy, and the taste was inbalanced. Too sweet, for example.
The food was also a far cry from authentic japanese as well. Not nearly enough rice, maki sushi with the rice on the outside and jam etc. on top. The nigiri sushi was also handled wrongly with too little rice and too much vinegar.
The spoons provided were for a completely different dish, and made it hard to eat my food.
Finally, the ingredients were not prepared properly, with shell pieces inside my tenpura.
All this, and it was fairly expensive. The only saving grace is that the locales were nice. Food 0 stars,...
