Every great island adventure deserves a feast to match — and for us, that was Big Jel’s Restomeat in Bantayan Island. This local gem was a recommendation from our amazing tour guide and tricycle driver, Kuya Lando of Lando’s Land Tour, who insisted, “Diri mo mokaon, lami gyud ni.” And he was absolutely right.
Tucked along Batobalonos Street near MJ Square, Big Jel’s is the kind of spot you might overlook — until the first spoonful changes your mind. We ordered pork sinigang, calamares, sizzling squid, and chicken curry — each one cooked to perfection and served in generous portions that made it the perfect post–island-hopping reward. The flavors hit that sweet spot of home-style cooking with local flair — comforting, hearty, and definitely maka-busog!
The ambiance? Simple and open-air, perfect for the island vibe. There’s a smoking area at the back, and the space feels roomy enough even when packed with happy diners. What truly stands out is the warm hospitality — every staff member smiles like you’re part of their family.
If you’re in Sta. Fe, skip the usual touristy restaurants and follow the locals’ lead — dine at Big Jel’s Restomeat. For us, it was the best meal of our entire Bantayan trip. Proof that when you listen to the locals, you don’t just find food — you find flavor,...
Read morePros: Very clean Quick and attentive service Free WiFi Free filtered water When it started raining they set up these pillars which came down to form a barrier from the rain Lots of ceiling fans and special machines to kill mosquitos and bugs, which is very nice considering I'd eaten somewhere in the area for lunch and could not eat in peace being attacked by flies literally every 5-10 seconda
Cons: The dishes were good sizes but the one pork dish we had was mostly fat with little meat on the pieces The Buko frappe drink is WAY too sweet, it tastes like ice cream and whipped cream with more sugar. I guess that's not an issue if you like that sort of thing but I would have preferred more fruit options, especially fresh...
Read moreOne of the many food stalls in Sta. Fe area. This is the first time I visited the place. The last time I was in Bantayan was Sep 2017 and this place was still under construction. They offer meal options which is definitely a “savers” option for budget travelers like me. The place is well ventilated so dining is never a hassle. The place did not meet my expectations, the food is not so delicious, waited a while to get it served, the staff is not so accommodating.
Will definitely check out the place next time to see for improvements or decline. 😉
