This review is specifically for Genki Sushi at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, and I feel it’s important to share our recent experience in detail for anyone considering dining there. Last week, my wife and I were out shopping at the mall, and we originally planned to eat at one of our usual go-to spots. On the way, however, we came across a Genki Sushi mascot handing out brochures. It had been about a month since we last had sushi, so we figured — why not give it a try?
Finding the location was slightly confusing. Genki Sushi is situated on the second level, but not directly inside the main part of the mall. It’s technically within the mall complex, but feels more like it’s in an outdoor extension — something between indoor and outdoor dining areas. If you’re not familiar with Ayala Malls Manila Bay, it might take a few extra minutes of wandering around to find it.
Once we arrived, the exterior looked promising and modern. However, once inside, it quickly became clear that comfort was not a priority. The space is extremely cramped, with very limited room between tables. It’s definitely not suited for groups or family gatherings. If you're planning to dine in a pair or solo, you might manage, but anything more than two people will find it tight and uncomfortable.
On a more positive note, I have to commend the staff and service. The team was attentive, quick to assist, and familiar with the menu. I was particularly impressed by their use of automation — the food arrives via a sushi train system that runs directly to your table. It's a fun and efficient touch that adds a bit of novelty to the experience.
Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment of the meal was the food itself. We ordered several items, but the biggest letdown was anything involving tuna. The tuna sushi, in particular, was extremely poor in quality — it tasted off, lacked freshness, and simply didn’t meet even the most basic expectations for sushi. I honestly suspect they might be using low-grade or pre-packaged tuna. I’ve tried sushi from several places around Metro Manila — even from smaller or lesser-known spots — but this was, without exaggeration, one of the worst sushi experiences I’ve had.
Adding to the frustration was the price point. Given the low quality of the ingredients and the underwhelming taste, the cost was far from justified. Sushi doesn’t have to be premium to be enjoyable, but at the very least, it should be fresh and flavorful. Sadly, Genki Sushi failed on both fronts, and we left feeling disappointed, especially considering the number of better alternatives available nearby.
To sum it up, I won’t be returning to this branch, or any Genki Sushi branch in the future. While the staff was great and the service innovative, that’s simply not enough to make up for the poor food quality and uncomfortable dining environment. If you're a sushi lover, I’d recommend skipping this one and exploring other, more authentic and better-valued Japanese restaurants...

Read moreMy overall experience at Genki sushi was quite good. The sushi was well made, although I suspect they did not use authentic Japanese rice as it was a sticky as it should have been, nonetheless good though. The novelty of the car which delivers the food seems to also continually deliver enjoyment as well. There is staff around to help with any concerns and larger dishes, but for the most part you are on your own when dining there. Upon sitting you are given a qr code to get to thier menu and to place your orders through thier online system (supposedly this is normally done with tablets at the table but they said that the tables were being upgraded, possibly they are trying to increase health safety by letting diners use thier own phones). As i had said the food was quite good, but for the serving sizes it was on the higher end in terms of cost (averaging ₱160-170 for three pieces of sushi). The prices seem low but they add up quick. I would say for two people to eat a decent meal, expect to spend ₱1200-1500. I would highly recommend the double spicy salmon roll, the fried salmon cheese roll and the spicy tuna tempura roll. Expect to spend when eating here but also expect to go home...
