I customized the regular Butao, selected “rich” for the broth, expecting that bold, deep and somehow satisfying flavor. Instead, what I got was a bowl with a noticeably thick layer of oil floating on top, and even after mixing it well, the richness just wasn’t there. It tasted a bit muted, like something was missing.
The gyoza didn’t really help balance things either. They looked alright, but tasted underseasoned. On their own, they came off pretty bland, which isn’t something I’ve ever thought about their gyoza before.
That said, the service was still solid. The staff were warm and attentive, topping up my water without me needing to ask, and the food came out quickly.
