I don't understand the great reviews. Maybe, just maybe we were there on an off day? But it was one of the worst, and longest (quick bite) experiences ever. We placed 2 orders and were quoted 5 minutes. We waited. And waited. And waited some more. It took nearly an hour to finally get our first order - the pork pierogis. They were cold - COLD cold... not even room temp or just slightly chilled.... COLD. Perhaps raw, as well? The meat seemed... mushy... so unless they cook the meat before filling, and I understand that many places do not (?), we were served cold, raw pork pierogis. Over an hour later we had not yet received our 2nd order (potato and cottage cheese, I believe?). I waited for quite some time to even get the chance to speak with her - there were several other people that also had issues with their orders. By the time I did, I simply asked she cancel our order and refund us for that 2nd one that we hadn't received. It was honestly just a terrible experience. We warned others approaching to place new orders - why on earth should anyone else be subjected to that? They left realizing that everyone there waiting had been there for longer than we should have been. There were others with orders that just gave up and walked away, one couple that was there before us that waited it out and eventually got their food (except not really, because they apparently got the wrong order) about an hour and 15 minutes later. And others that were waiting still as well. If this place is typically so great, how did it go SO very wrong today? I'm just hoping we don't get sick if we were indeed given raw meat. I could not possibly ever recommend this place. It was about as terrible as it...
Read moreThis place was a tip from our lovely tour guide, as a not-so-well-hidden local secret! We were super happy to see even local grandmas buying the frozen packages to bring home - a sure sign that we've found a good place!
A very casual dining spot with lovely al fresco seating outside in its characteristic sunny-yellow color, this place attracts a lot of tourists as well, as evidenced by their cork board where visitors can write thank you notes.
This place has seriously spoiled me for life. I can never eat another pierogi without mentally comparing to the divine taste of what I had here (and crying when what I get elsewhere, even in other pierogi places around Krakow, can't match up). Our absolutely favorite was the mushroom ones - Aunt Ula's can't be beat, with that cheesy mushroom taste. We also loved the regular potato and bacon, and the spinach ones, but the mushroom ones were still the best. Make sure you go early - the popular mushroom ones do sell out!
Another wonderful surprise - golabki! This was the other favorite that we discovered. Being used to the Japanese ones, I was surprised to find that this one had rice in it! Topped with what I suspect is paprikesh, the whole steamy ensemble made us come back another two times in our trip.
It's not directly in the Old Town area, but still totally worth the 15-minute trek! Bonus: the path from Old Town Square to this place passes by the Central Post Office, so you can drop off your...
Read moreAfter extensively researching the best restaurant to get pierogis from in Krakow, I decided to add this place to my list. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Przystanek Pierogarnia was within 10 minutes Walking Distance of our hotel! Situated in a charming neighborhood not too far from the Main Square, this restaurant is conveniently located on a corner on a quiet street. Be forewarned that the restaurant is small (it is essentially a counter restaurant, but with a counter seating area and one or two tables outside). Luckily, during both of my visits I did not have an issue getting seating but customers did pop in and out frequently. I am a vegetarian and ordered the Wegańskie, which contains lentils and carrots, both times which were hearty and cooked to perfection. While I did not enjoy solely due to personal preference but thought was a unique experience nonetheless, the "Cherries" pierogis and the Beet Root soup consisted of generous portion sizes and were fresh. The Polish Handmade Fruit Juice, otherwise known as "Kompot", pairs perfectly with pierogis. The restaurant is definitely a spot for locals but the employees do speak decent English. This restaurant, along with its food and its atmosphere, was a highlight of our trip to Poland which also included cities...
