O Batel — Restaurant in Aveiro

I don't know what some people here are talking about when they talk about poor service. We were there on a busy late afternoon when the entire dining room was packed, and the gentleman who greeted and served us (presumably the owner) was unbelievably friendly and kind with every single patron in the restaurant. He came to every table several times and chatted and laughed with all his guests. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. He guided us patiently through the menu and made excellent wine pairing suggestions. The seafood rice was generous with all sorts of fresh ingredients and was an excellent value considering it fed three people handily. Do yourself a favor and try the unconventional cheesecake... with the emphasis on cheese. The sweet and salty balance was unusual but worked very well. We ended up being the last guests in the restaurant during the switch between lunch and dinner service, and not once were we rushed or made to feel anything but warmly welcomed the whole time. A backstreet location and a good review brought us to this small, wood-panelled restaurant in very tourist-y Aveiro. It specialises in fish and we ordered one of the suggested dishes – an expensive prawn curry with fruit for two people. Our waitress was sullen and we had to virtually beg for something green or vegetable-y to accompany our meal. They found us a dish of burnt garlic, cabbage and carrot and had the temerity to charge us extra for it. The dish itself was terrible. Although the prawns were tender and well-cooked, they came in a gelatinous sauce bitter with uncooked curry powder. The fruit – a pile of pineapple, apples and grapes – had been added to the dish stone cold, so the whole dish was barely warm, adding to its unpleasantness. €30 for this dish. Maybe their other dishes are better, but I'd be suspicious of anywhere that gave you fish knives and no finger bowls when...

A pior experiência que já tive em toda a minha vida num restaurante. Tudo começou pelo telefone: ligamos para saber se havia mesa disponível e, ao receber um “sim”, perguntamos se poderia fazer uma reserva. Fomos desligados na cara. Relatei isso a mim mesma, pensando que o dono poderia não ter ouvido. No entanto, ao chegar ao restaurante, a decepção só aumentou. Nenhum sorriso, nenhum “boa noite” ou “olá”. Tive de perguntar se havia uma mesa para dois, e fui direcionada ao fundo da sala, de forma pouco acolhedora. O atendimento foi o pior possível desde o início: antipático, frio e distante. Mas, novamente, relutei em criticar, pensando que o senhor que nos atendeu poderia ser apenas mais velho e talvez cansado.

No entanto, o cúmulo foi quando, ao pedir a conta, o atendente, que também parecia ser o dono, olhou para o meu namorado e, de forma rude e desrespeitosa, disse: “Para a próxima, venha bem vestido”, apenas porque ele estava usando um fato de treino – como se estivéssemos em um restaurante de estrela Michelin e não num tasco. O tratamento foi inaceitável, humilhante e absolutamente desnecessário. A atitude do proprietário foi não só desrespeitosa, mas também preconceituosa, já que ninguém deveria ser tratado de forma inferior com base na aparência ou no que está vestindo. Isso é um reflexo de uma falta total de profissionalismo e educação.

Além disso, pedimos a conta mais cedo do que gostaríamos, pois o dono começou a discutir aos berros com a funcionária da cozinha. Foi completamente inconveniente. Eu e o outro casal presente estávamos ouvindo a discussão e as palavras grosseiras proferidas pelo dono. Esse tipo de comportamento só reforça o total desrespeito e a falta de profissionalismo que permeia o atendimento neste restaurante.

Desde a ligação até a nossa saída, nunca fui tão mal atendida em toda a minha vida. A falta de cortesia, empatia e respeito ao cliente é alarmante. Se você está procurando um lugar onde se sinta valorizado, esse restaurante definitivamente não é a opção. Lamentável que um estabelecimento com tanta má vontade e atendimento tão desprezível continue funcionando. Definitivamente, não recomendo.
