What a find! Towards the end of three weeks in Madeira, when we have enjoyed all the local delicacies, we fancied something a little different, and on a local walk found this charming French-style bistro.
The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. The ambience is calm, with unintrusive French background music.
Having perused the tempting menu, we ordered Gravlax Salmon/Hot Goat's Cheese Salad for our starters. A nice surprise was an 'amuse bouche' of a slice of camembert with a hint of tapenade and fresh bread. The starters then arrived and were both delicious.
Along with many other diners, we ordered mains of rare fillet steaks with either Beurre de Café Paris or Black Pepper Sauce. Both were exquisitely tasty, and generously proportioned, with quality beef perfectly cooked - the best we have ever eaten anywhere (including France!). It was refreshing to have French-style veggies and amazingly tasty home-made chips served with the steak.
To accompany the steak we ordered a bottle of red wine from the Tejo region of Portugal, which was excellent and outstanding value.
Despite really being too full, we rounded off the meal with chocolate fondant (requires a welcome 15-minute space to cook) and tarte tatin - as French as it gets! Delicious.
We will definitely return next year, and have no hesitation in recommending this great...
Read moreWow. A gem in Funchal. I love the simple menu. Every dish has been minutiously crafted and is of the highest standard. The carrots Vichy and the creamed spinach brought the flavors of my youth back to memory only, so much better (sorry, mom). The beef fillet was spectacular, the scabbard and chicken piccata were wonderful. The seasonings were impressive and precise in all the dishes, from the baked camembert to the mains accompaniements. The chocolat fondant was generous and perfectly balanced. It is clear a lot of work went into everything that Bistrot des Anges serves and they should be proud. The service was outstanding. I felt at home. Not catered but cared for. There is a genuine friendliness about every member of the restaurant that I have not found anywhere else. I only have praise for Bistrot des Anges and it will be a mandatory stop next time I am in Funchal. Thank you to...
Read moreThere is not much to add here that has not already been said about this restaurant - the food is outstanding and the service friendly and efficient. We chose to sit inside where the tables are spaced well apart. The atmosphere is typically 'bistro' but not excessively loud due to the large internal space and high ceiling. The fillet steaks that my wife and I chose were particularly good - probably the best (and largest!) that we have ever enjoyed. We couldn't fault anything about our meal, which we would judge to be very fair value for what it cost us (just over €100 for three courses and one of the best wines from the wine list). I have noticed one or two rather curmudgeonly reviews fire this restaurant on 'The Fork' and Tripadvisor; in my opinion these can safely be ignored. We will certainly...
