As a person who studied and graduated in the best and well-known school in hospitality management, I will give you a objective review.
Well, the place is very nice unfortunately it doesn’t make up for the food or the service.
We were asked to wait 30 minutes, which is understandable since we didn’t have a reservation, but we ended up waiting 45 minutes and when we got placed we realized that the majority of the table were empty. Therefore, there is a communication or management issue on that part.
While we waited at the bar, we got served by a nice and polite gentleman with two very great drinks which were the only highlight of our evening.
The wait to be served was reasonable, but the food wasn’t up to the prices. You may be on a touristic island but do not forget that it is still Portugal.
Do not ask for the truffled spaghetti, you will be served a ramen bowl with no truffle. The only truffle taste was on the liquid soup (and not sauce as indicated on the menu) made with soy milk and it probably was an industrial truffle.
For the pork, the only taste you will have is salt, no other explanation is necessary. As the french say « the chef must be in love ».
The sad side of this is the fact that we were not asked once during diner if everything was good and not even when we paid.
In fact, when we were paying, the only concern they had was for us to pay the optional 10% tip that is automatically written on the note. It is optional, in no case the client should feel pressured into paying it. Some cultures may say otherwise, but I will repeat : this is Portugal. I am the first person to tip up to 25%, even if in this country a 5/7€ tip is already very much appreciated.
When we said that we were not comfortable paying a 10% tip because we were disappointed, we were once again not asked what had went wrong. For the septic people out there, I many time worked in different positions in restauration as part of my studies, therefore I still left a 6€ tip, as I believe that the issue isn’t on every employee.
Overall, this place very much feels as a tourist’s trap. The ambiance and place is very nice but the rest isn’t up to it, the client’s satisfaction must be a priority and there are many ways that they could have improved our experience, but they...
Read more4 Apr 2024 I’ve given 1 star because I can’t give 0 stars this is a review for the service we received at the beginning and for what happened at the end of our stay at the Savoy Palace. I won’t go into what happened at the beginning that was discussed with Joana Franca. What I’m more bothered about is what happened at the end of our stay. What happened could’ve resulted in a much more serious injury due to the collapsed restaurant chair (photos attached) all I did was pull my chair in closer to the table. Hotel director says these things happen, no they don’t not in the hotels I stay in and that’s five stars all the time and never has it ever happened to myself or have I seen it happen to anyone else until that night when there could’ve been another collapsed chair. I also noticed another guest sat nearby asked for her chair of the same design to be changed please speak to your staff about this guest she didn’t even see my chair collapse she arrived after the event. There was a couple who witnessed my fall from the collapsed chair. I did not receive an apology from the General Manager. After the chair incident one of your waiters said I can’t look at you as I want to laugh how rude you do not at any time speak to guest in this manner, would they have laughed if I had broken a bone etc I had to laugh it off but for a five star hotel this is diabolical. On another note drinking glasses not washed or new ones given my lipstick was still on the glass and this is after my room was cleaned, toilet in our room seemed to smell, dirty marks on the wall near the patio door. Rude staff one thought it funny how I had my coffee and had pleasure in saying so at least three times when having breakfast again very rude it’s not acceptable. We also didn’t see any life guards near the pool unless the guys that give out the towels are life guards. Locked out of our room at 11:20 even though we had someone collecting our bags at 11:30 plus it is 12 noon when you have to vacate. My husband had to go to reception to have the key reset. This was our second trip to Madeira 1st...
Read moreWe had the Fire Pit Experience, which is available Thursday to Saturday only.
All the vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.. Are picked either from the garden next to the restaurant, or from a larger section a bit further away.
All the fish were fresh that day, and the meats are selected from prime cuts.
Each course and even the drinks, a full explication is given of where the ingredients come from, and why they have been used/combined.
We arrived and was served a rum cocktail that all the juices were from their gardens.
Then some smoked Mellon with Sake was our first taste of the food. It was simple, elegant and delicious. My 10 year old son had many slices (don't worry thr alcohol had evaporated in the smoking process).
Next was some Padron Pepers and corn on the cob, that had been cooked and charged on the fire pit. Again some special seasoning was added that elevated these simole dishes.
So taosted selection of breads were next, as this was our first appetiser, and was served with some homemade butter.
This was followed by a Tuna stater, then our two main dishes which were fish and beef. I could spend another 200 words describing these, but as each week its a different menu, all you need to know it was quality ingredients cooked to perfection, with sauses and sides that raised and elevated that main ingredient.
The whole time our wine glasses had been kept topped up (or beer / cocktails if you prefer).
The only minor blip was the desert that didn't quiet live up to the other dishes... For some of us.
An amazing food experience, and all inclusive for €55 including drinks.
If you are staying near by on holiday and love simple food done to perfection then you must do the Fire...
