Rubi's Snack Bar — Restaurant in Funchal

A disappointment after a previously great experience

We visited Rubi’s Snack Bar on a Tuesday evening in June 2025. There were only a few other customers, and our expectations were high – I had been here a year earlier and had an excellent meal with friendly service.

This time, the experience was completely different. Our group consisted of five people: four adults and one child. We placed our order around 7:00 PM and received our drinks promptly and correctly.

But that was it. At 8:00 PM, we asked about our food for the first time – the waiter assured us it would arrive soon. It didn’t. At 8:15 PM, we informed the staff that we would leave soon if the meals didn’t arrive. By 8:30 PM, we had had enough and left the restaurant hungry, frustrated, and angry.

I was ready to pay for our drinks, but the host said it wasn’t necessary – at least something positive in an otherwise disappointing evening.

I hope this was an exception, but unfortunately, I cannot recommend the restaurant based on this visit.

My wife and I had an outstanding dining experience at Rubi's in Madeira. I enjoyed a superb mixed grill platter featuring several different steaks, each cooked to perfection. Every piece was a five-star delight. My wife had what she considered the best tuna steak on the island. Both dishes were elevated by a wonderfully salty and herby seasoning that truly enhanced the flavors.

This place has got the best sandwiches I have ever had, they can even make a sandwich exactly to your liking and it doesn’t cost any less money than their usual sandwich. Rubi also has got the best food out of every snack bar on Madeira, I’ve been here for a few weeks and I have been going to Rubi for breakfast every single day. This is really cool local restaurant! Food is very delicious and the portions are very sufficient, everything what we ate was fresh and nicely cooked.
