A hidden gem away from the tourist centers of Lisbon, we had an early morning flight booked out of Lisbon and were staying in a hotel close to the airport and wanted to find a place for dinner that didn't require going as far as Chiado, Alfama, Baixa, etc., so we came to this area due to the density of restaurants in the vicinity.
Walking by, this place was busy and colorful, and we saw such a unique variety on the menu that we decided to give it a try. We could not have been more pleased! We ordered the quail eggs (which had a delicious chimichurri-like sauce), an arancini-like croquette served with two different sauces, the cheese and ham stuffed mushrooms, and the oxtail entrée. Each dish was so rich and flavorful, and when we were looking for a wine to pair, the proprietor said "come with me" and showed me their entire wine selection on the cabinet which had all the prices well-labeled, and I was able to peruse and choose at my leisure.
The wait staff and the proprietor himself were highlights of the dinner though, friendly and ready with recommendations and obviously proud of their menu and products.
We asked for recommendations for dessert at the end of the meal, and they asked if we wanted something more "traditional Portuguese", which we did, and they ended up serving us an orange-flavored dense sponge cake, along with one glass of port and one iced glass of amarguinha, the bitter almond liquor of Portugal. They each paired well with the dessert in different ways.
While we had many, many delicious meals during our vacation in Portugal, this will honestly stand out as one of the most memorable. I definitely recommend you come here if you have the...
Read moreAfter having been disappointed eating out in the city centre, we decided to visit a local hostelry, and thank goodness we did. The interior is very quirky with lots of interesting oddments and lights decorating it. The welcome was very good, our host managed to find us a lovely table and we just about bridged the language differences to be fed magnificently. Complimentary fresh bread and a lovely cheese sauce arrived without request. We went with the hosts recommendations..and were treated with superb fare. My beef was fall off the fork tender, the mash superb and the veg flavoursome with a slight crunch. The other meal was a roasted cod fish on a parsnip? mash, and was also perfectly cooked. It was accompanied by a splendid Alentejo wine, a Vidigueira Antao Vaz, lovely crisp, dry and fruity. We were convinced to have desserts, and they were splendid also, a honey roulade and a cheesecake. It was all under €60, quite astonishing really considering prices we had paid for lesser food on some previous days. 3 minutes from Alameda Metro, and if you are there in the daytime, there is also a fresh food market in the centre of the...
Read moreWhat a hidden gem I just found in Lisbon! Being a traveller and eating outside a lot I have developed very sensitive eyes to hospitality details, and not many places I’ve visited so far are so close to perfection than this one. All the staff is just amazing, the owner Carlos is able to give the best vibe ever, and the head waiter Picasso is super helpful and makes the whole experience very pleasant. Talking about food now, literally the best restaurant in Lisbon (and it’s very hard choice as Lisbon is full of great food experiences) I’ve been in 10 years of visits, all the ingredients are spotless and all the plates are very well studied. Both meat and fish plates were incredibles. If you want to give a sparkle to your night, accept the owner’s surprise suggestion , he just never fails to deliver. Wine selection also very good, and the price you pay for what you are getting is nearly unfair (so cheap it looks unreal). I won’t stop recommending this place to friends and family that come to town, and definitely will be back at any visit (I went two nights in a row in my last visit, and did not get bored at...
