Kenji by Katsuo sushi bar — Restaurant in Lisbon

I only write a review when is excellent or bad. This little sushi place is in Principle Real next to Parliament in a super tourist area but without the “tourist “rip off prices”. I’m an American living in Lisbon so I’m looking for spots like this. Let’s talk about food:

Food: I ordered the Seaweed salad, shrimp tamaki and small platter. Fish was EXCELLENT. Fresh. They are closed as any great sushi place should as fishermen don’t work on Sundays so you know they only serve fresh fish and not frozen. Prices are very inexpensive for the quality they serve in the most popular touristic zone.

Service: sweet and professional staff. My friend was vegetarian and they made thing for her out of menu. That’s great service! On point w checking on you. She was knowledgeable about the menu and even though her English isn’t her first language she was perfect. The owner also was there and check the tables for quality control.

Atmosphere: Love it! Authentic Japanese and minimalist which I love. Great choice of music and they keep the noise level to a minimum so you can actually hear yourself and your friends.

Oh and they didn’t force Tip on you as most restaurants illegally doing in Lisbon as Portugal doesn’t have a tip cultue. So I give them a 5 star for their honesty and excellent quality which seems to be a rarity in hospitality and restaurant business these days. I hope you get to enjoy this little gem of a place in Lisbon.

I recently dined at Kenji by Katsuo Sushi Bar, tucked away on R. de São Bento in Lisbon. From the moment I arrived, the warm wooden interior with hanging greenery set a calm, inviting vibe.

I started with a shrimp tempura and miso soup—both were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The highlight was the sushi: the chef’s 36-piece combo was exquisite, and the sunomono (octopus in sesame sauce) offered a refreshing contrast . Every bite felt meticulously prepared, showcasing real attention to detail. Prices are on the higher side—expect around €34 per person for mains—but the quality and service made it worthwhile.

I had been looking for a good Japanese restaurant in Lisbon for quite a long time. This one is a real gourmet experience where every piece is absolutely delicious from their miso soups, to their many variations of sushis, up to their desserts. Second time I went there today with a friend, and this will definitely be my go-to place when I fancy some Japanese food.
