A must see museum for those who really enjoy science in it's essential way. Regardless of fashion constraints, the eternity of nature's beauty is again demonstrated there.
Museu Geológico (an entity of Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia) : from swede's Karl von Linne (long thought he was a Frenchman) to Darwin's genius and patient eyes to colourful gemstones from almost all over the globe , going through a rich collection of Portugal's fossils (including complete leg parts of harmless local dinosaur 🦖 🦕 Lourinhasaurus ) the most remarkable of which constitute Type Specimen specifically highlighted in the vitrines ("A Estrela das Estrelas - Espécimes Tipo do Museu Geológico) as well as explanation of the role of Plate Tectonics in the birth of current Portugal's geologic reality (no ... not all the country is constitutive of old volcanic rocks !) this relatively small museum is a jewel and as a Geologist I really recommend it's visit. Note that the neighboring premises of Academia das Ciências de Lisboa also hosts free conference cycles on interesting contemporary topics such as debating the world' complex geopolitical environment we are currently...
Read moreI walked into an impressive hallway, up a grand staircase & was underwhelmed by the €5 entrance fee despite being secretly impressed by the displays in the reception area. The receptionist was amicable, accommodating, informative & pleasant. Then I looked in to the main display area & had to take a breath. My only research before hand was to google map geological interests in Lisbon. I felt like Indiana Jones making a discovery but there was no danger of falling foul of a trap or trick. What a find!. What I thought would take 20 minutes turned into hours, losing track of time investigating the treasures presented. Did I mention underwhelmed?, scrap that. I was amazed. Bamboozled even!. I took a trip through millions of years, touched petrified wood, gazed upon gaseous geodes, fossilised plant matter, ammonites, trilobites & historical associations. An informative guide through evolution & inevitable trials. to chemical, gaseous, chaotic genomic marvels. I'm in Lisbon for 3 more days & I intend to revisit/revise. Cannot...
Read moreAwesome! Small and classical museum with a lot of great things. I didn't realise how many gems and fossils they had. The dinosaur room is really pretty great and walks you through the stages of prehistory via the fossil record. Incredible fossils are just nonchalantly laying about "oh, yeah, that's just an apatosaurus spinal column, don't step on it", there was a quartz the size of a giant watermelon, hominid skulls, and many other things. Don't miss it. Also don't miss the museum on the ground floor of the...
