Second visit edit: you just welcomed me back so kindly. For lunch earlier today, I ate the roast veal on brioche (as before, I asked for sourdough instead). This thing arrives in a bowl with thinly sliced roast, fresh cress greens, a sprinkle of seeds (pumpkin?) for texture, cucumber pickles, and a citrusy Asian sauce with a tender heat and a salt kick (the sous chef gave me a teaspoon of it to try). There’s that fennel seed in there somewhere, perhaps in the roast. It’s all sitting on a juice-soaked slice of the bread. The second visit is the ultimate test for a restaurant you like, isn’t it? — your expectations have grown in your time away and you come back ripe for disappointment. Absolutely loved this neighbourhood cafe! We tried the oven baked eggs, salmon on sourdough (instead they had olive oil bread), hummus, matcha creme brulee and poached pear with mascarpone & port wine. We find that the menu is well-curated and the chef put some thought and magic in all dishes. The coffee was great too. Katerina was attending our table and she was really kind and friendly. We thought that it was our best cafe experience in Lisbon. (On the way to the cafe we saw many pigeons chilling on the electric cables. The cafe's sign is a pigeon head. Then I ordered the healthy juice called Pombo's revenge and asked Katerina who pombo is. Apparently pombo means pigeon in Portuguese and they had a little struggle with a pigeon at some point.) Canto in Lisbon is an absolute gem! The ceviche is simply outstanding—so fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. Every bite was a delight. The bread and tomato barrada were equally incredible, with rich flavors and a melt-in-your-mouth texture that left us wanting more.
