Had a tremendous meal, food is outstanding. Service was decent until we finished. Attempted to get the waiter to bring the check. Waited and waited, trying to get his attention. Tried some more, all the while he served those around us, got their drinks and food, but ignored our attempts to wave him down. Meanwhile, the table behind us, who came much later than we did but had finished their meal, were similarly frustrated by their efforts to get their check. Finally, the woman, who spoke Portuguese, demanded her check, quite bruskly, and he took care of her. Perhaps I should have followed her lead, but I was trying not to be the annoying tourist (also my wife is not one to put up a fuss and hopes I don't as well). Other customers were watching his blatant refusal to acknowledge us (it was impossible to ignore) and appeared as baffled as we were. Finally, I gave my wife my card, thinking she may have better luck waving him down. We talked to the adjoining table, who were as mystified as we were. Eventually, he brought the bill, which he left for us to look over. He then ignored our attempts to get him to bring the card reader so we could pay and get out. Walked straight by us 3 times, all the while my wife was holding up the check book, before she (thankfully not me) literally grabbed him. Finally got out of there with my hair on fire. A special meal turned into miserable ending. Some of the best food we've had in Portugal, but the worst service. I went from thinking I couldn't wait to come back to never again. I hope you have better luck...
Read moreWe stopped by Porta 6 for tapas after a day trip to Horta and it ended up being one of our favorite meals on Pico. We ordered the tuna tataki, shrimp bao, chicken bao, and a couple of drinks. Every single bite was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We finished with the red fruit cheesecake and crème brûlée, and both were absolutely delicious.
The interior is chic and modern, with a cozy atmosphere and a lovely touch of local charm through the old photos of Pico Island on the walls. The service was outstanding. Everyone was friendly and attentive, and the servers all spoke excellent English, which made the experience even smoother.
We are already planning to come back before we leave the island....
Read moreWe went to Porta6 as we saw it earlier that day while walking through Madalena and we lucky that we got a table. The restaurant is a small place with a pretty niece interior. The concept is - as the name tells - Wine and Tapas and they really do a good job here. We had a variety of Tapas - they were very tasty and kinda special - and a perfect matching wine. The service - especially the man from Terceira - was good and very kind and a decent host! Definitely a good spot for Madalena and worth visiting of even waiting if it’s full. If you plan your trips in advance you better book a table to be on...
