I spent a while looking at the numerous restaurants in the are. I wanted somewhere serving traditional food of better than average quality in a cosy setting for a reasonable price. I chose A KNAIPA on a whim and found a little gem. I sat in a cosy and traditional style interior where the other diners were all Portuguese, which I took as a good sign. I ordered polvo at 15 euros and was presented with three beautifully tender tentacles with potatoes and vegetables. I've paid more for a single chewy tentacle elsewhere. I finished with a tangy homemade lime tart, all accompanied by the usual nibbles, a halt bottle of wine and coffee. My bill came to a very reasonable 30 euros.

We took a traditional Portuguese cabbage soup that was nice, with this kind of unique gelatines texture and for the main grilled sardines. The sardines are extraordinary! Fresh and grilled to order. The place could get crowded at lunchtime and it gets a bit noisy, but it is part of the charm.

Aconselhados pelos nossos anfitriões, escolhemos entre um vasto menu de camarões, filetes de bacalhau, polvo e pequenas lulas. Apreciando a entrada (queijo e presunto ibérico e azeitonas), esperámos pelos pratos. E, eufemisticamente, não desiludiu! Quantidade e qualidade bem equilibradas. O sabor puro do marisco sobressaiu bem, apoiado pelos legumes e algumas ervas aromáticas ligeiras. Acompanhados por um vinho branco do Douro, desfrutámos desta excelente refeição. Não tomámos a sobremesa nem o café, pois tínhamos outros planos, mas talvez voltemos para recuperar essa parte da refeição.
