Once again, I was disappointed with a sushi restaurant in Olhão. I can't help but think that they are desecrating Japanese food. To them, a restaurant is nothing more than a way to make money. As they are obviously not Japanese I wonder why they don't open an establishment featuring their own country's food.. which they would surely be more proud of and understand better. I'm quite surprised to hear that they have branches both in Olhao AND Tavira and cannot help but question the palates of those who rated this place as 'delicious'. It's not!
So there's a penalty if you order something that isn't tasty and leave it uneaten at the end of the meal? Shouldn't it be the restaurant that serves inferior food that has to pay a penalty?
There were almost no vegetarian options, so we asked, "Do you have vegetable tempura?" and was served mostly fruit sushi. Now, if you know sushi for vegetarians , you'd imagine cucumber, Japanese pickles, or fried tofu.. but mango and strawberry sushi? That's fruit - not vegetable! Using fruit for sushi is crazy - soon they'll be serving strawberry sushi topped with whipped cream and chocolate.
Also, the nori seaweed smelled old and damp. In my travels I have visited several 'sushi restaurants' in Portugal and sadly have to report that the nori at every restaurant was old, lacking the characteristic fragrant aroma of nori. If you don't know how to handle seaweed, don't open a sushi restaurant.
They probably don't even have a good sense of smell, considering they employ waiters who have noticeable underarm odor.
The service was also substandard.. it was basically 'service with a scowl` - so when back in Olhao I will certainly not revisit. If the owner was smart, they would change the establishment to another food style immediately.
Maybe to something they...

Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Service at UMI SUSHI Restaurant in Olhão, Portugal
English:
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service received at UMI SUSHI in Olhão, Portugal, on December 27th. Despite enjoying the food, the overall experience was marred by poor communication and a lack of explanation regarding the ordering process.
The menu is exclusively in Portuguese, and the waitstaff failed to inform us that it was an all-you-can-eat menu. Additionally, they did not explain the methodology for placing orders. We ordered 8 sushi units, 1 Miso soup, 2 beers, and 1 Coca Cola, totaling €41.
The communication with the waitress was severely hindered as they did not speak Portuguese, Spanish, or English. I recommend ensuring clear communication about the ordering process in the future.
While the food was enjoyable, the lack of transparency in the ordering process left a negative impression. I believe there was a lack of good faith on the part of the staff who attended to our order.

Read moreI would expect a better service coming into this small restaurant. We had a reservation for 4, took a little while until someone would care to guide us to our table. After being ignored for 15min and seeing other clients that had arrived after us being served first, we had to force a waiter to stop by to take our drinks. We are Portuguese living in Portugal and the staff asked us to speak english.. Food was delivered fairly quickly and the quality is alright overall. The gyozas were very soggy and dripping in oil though. We went on a friday night (the most expensive night of the week on their menu). Deserts are not included and we preferred to have a good one for cheaper somewhere...
