A Companhia - Museu do Douro — Restaurant in Peso da Régua

We ate at A Companhia with my woman on a Thursday night, this having been my first choice when we arrived in town two days before but the restaurant was closed. It happened to be empty and we had the entire room and staff for us. Speak about exclusivity. The food was simply amazing. And yet, it was the same dourada grelhada that I had eaten at least once in that same week, except that this time, it was with bacon and rosemary. Every bite, from the fish to the broccolis to the potatoes, was heavenly. The atmosphere felt distinguished, classy, due to the pleasantly low music volume and to the décor: old dark brown wood floor and sober white and grey colors outlined with a dark shade of red. There's ample space between the tables. A thought crossed my mind: someone with an eye for details and a balanced aesthetics that speaks to me must have overseen this layout. We didn’t dine inside the restaurant, but sat at the bar in the garden outside facing the Douro River and had a coffee—and it was a lovely surprise. The setting is a little hidden, tucked behind the museum, and the view over the river is peaceful and beautiful. It felt like a quiet refuge in the middle of our drive.

The bar staff were attentive and friendly. Even though we only had coffee, it was clear this is a place meant for lingering, for enjoying the scenery and letting the moment sink in. I’ve read other reviews that praise the elegant ambience and how locals and visitors appreciate the combination of museum + riverside café.

Ficámos curiosos por visitar este restaurante depois de ver a descrição dos pratos, pelas muitas críticas positivas e pelo facto dos valores não serem exagerados. Achámos logo estranho o facto do restaurante estar vazio mas fomos recebidos de forma muito simpática, pedimos uma tábua de enchidos de entrada e ficámos logo surpreendidos pela quantidade generosa e pela qualidade, já comi entradas mais caras com metade da quantidade... Pedimos como pratos principais medalhão de vitela com queijo da Serra e redução de vinho do Porto e posta de vitela com maçã em vinho do Porto, pratos originais, diferentes, bem servidos e bem cozinhados, com combinações de sabor que não são habituais em restaurantes deste intervalo de valores. Como seria de esperar não resistimos à sobremesa e pedimos telha de amêndoa com gelado de frutos secos e pudim com uma base de amêndoa, ambas deliciosas. Ainda tivemos oportunidade de provar um dos melhores vinhos do Porto que já bebi, cortesia da casa. Em suma e voltando ao tema inicial, tivemos curiosidade em perceber o porquê do espaço estar vazio e o que nos disseram foi que talvez por já ser o terceiro grupo de restauração a explorar o espaço e pelo facto dos anteriores não terem tido sucesso, esse fama poderá ser um dos entraves. O facto de estar inserido num espaço museu, pode também afastar pessoas que achem que é caro, mas a ementa está à porta, além de estar na página do restaurante. Somos de Coimbra e não vamos ter muitas oportunidades de visitar o espaço, temos pena de não ter ido no primeiro dia, porque teríamos regressado no segundo com toda a certeza. Só esperamos que comece a ter mais salas cheias e que não seja um espaço de qualidade que acabe por fechar.
