Taberna do Jéréré — Restaurant in Peso da Régua

It's not often I give a bad review, but I can't make this one good. Firstly they put starters on your table without advising you pay for them if you eat them. I suspected as much when it wasn't just bread and olive oil but some other local dish with ham as well, I asked the waiter and he confirmed it wasn't complimentary. We shared the fish dish, it is the first one on the menu. The flavours were great but my half of the dish was not warm, the other side was hot. At the end of the meal the bill was incorrect, we were charged for all the starters rather than just the bread. When I asked the changed the bill and gave me back €2 but it should have been €3 I didn't want to make a fuss for €1 but will certainly not come back to this restaurant. It is a shame they do this as they have enough customers not to have to cheat them...

We have been to this restuarant 3 times before and the food is good but the male waiter serving our table - completely unprofessional - spoilt this experience for us so unfortunately we will never go back My husband ordered a large beer - this was never bought - and then a sarcastic comment about "drink it up quickly" . The steak and fish order for our table of 4 was completely wrong and we had to endure false friendliness throughout. I feel sorry for the chef who makes good food to have it spoilt by this waiter. All the other tables got this unprofessional chit chat that spoilt the entire...

Overall the food was great but it was a bit awkward with the service. They don't speak any English or barely and my wife and I don't speak portuguese but only English and French. During our 3 weeks in Portugal, we didn't have any issues anywhere but this place somehow was more difficult. First of all the "couvert" ended up costing €8 which was quite high as it's usually 2 to 3 euros. We asked for half a bottle of wine and they brought us a full one. During the meal, the waiters are just standing there staring at the guests. It's ok the first 2 minutes but it gets very uncomfortable...
