If you have ever been lucky enough to have a local cafe this is your equivalent when travelling. Don’t bother with the disappointment of eating by the Douro in Porto, instead hop on the metro to Heroismo, cross the road and look for the sign for Cafe Marinho. Established in 1956, this local has an extensive reasonably priced menu and wine list. We were in Porto for four nights and had our first lunch and two evening meals here. Friendly staff whose multilingual skills were far superior to my efforts in Portuguese were very helpful and there is an English translation included in the menu. A caring and engaging chef treated us to seafood delights including an outstanding octopus salad. The hake and cod were also very well treated. We had the best French fries we have ever been served too. The chef understands his ingredients and can manage volume without loss of quality. Try and leave room for the exceptional Portuguese cheese, Serra da Estrela. Enjoy the local atmosphere and savour the cuisine. We are very sorry to be moving on.

The expectations need to be real. You are not walking into a Michele restaurant but for a cafe/diner type place this is a great spot to enjoy. The prices are decent and you get good quality food. The pizza is a must try and the cabbage they provide is amazing. I was not a fan of the toasted cheese bread as it was a bit heavy for me but as a local dish it must be tried. The French fries that came with it were amazing and should definitely be ordered. The seafood is amazing as my parents came into two days in a row due to the calamari dish and how fresh and tasteful it was. Also they give nice garlic beard which was quite delicious. Staff was in my opinion very friendly

My spouse and I enjoyed the cuisine at this establishment. We ordered a special francesinha dish, which was accompanied by delectable fries, bread, and olives. Although this restaurant may not be a popular tourist destination, the quality of the food is truly exceptional.

Food tasted awful. We ordered two different steak dishes. The meat was incredibly tough and lacked real flavour. Both dishes came with French fries that were soggy. The French fries took up half of the portion of the dish, when the price of the dish was €20+. We were served bread that we didn’t order. The bread was very dry and hard. At first we thought the bread and the butter were free of charge as we didn’t order them, but we ended up paying for both of them. We couldn’t believe there was a separate charge for the butter. Communication was poor too. The two shopkeepers couldn’t understand English at all and ended up serving us things we didn’t order - and failed to serve us things...
