It pains me to give the lowest score, but I need to warn those with food intolerances to beware! Me sister is coeliac and vegan. We booked Ondo for our first meal in Porto back in April 2022 - and my sister emailed and phoned well in advance to specifically discuss if they can cater for her - they already had vegan dishes on the menu and they advised anything could be adjusted to be gluten free. We ordered the veggie bibimbap without the egg (to make it vegan) and the fried tofu with rice - asking if they could ensure it was gluten free. The tofu and rice came and we both began eating it - it was delicious. The bibimbap followed, but with an egg on it... when I queried it, the waiter said it was vegan, I challenged back and he went to take the egg off. No problem at all - however it made me query the fried tofu... To our utter shock, when we checked if the tofu was made gluten free, the waiter very nonchalantly said 'oh, no sorry, it's not' - as if it wasn't a big deal. By now, my sister had already eaten several pieces, and the damage was already caused. By the evening, she was incredibly uncomfortable, and spent the rest of the weekend in agony, with a distended belly, night terrors, and generally feeling anxious and sick. Coeliac is not a diet preference, its an autoimmune disorder - the gluten served in this restaurant facilitated my sister's immune system to attack itself. Just because it doesn't cause instant anaphylaxis like a peanut allergy, it doesn't mean it's not serious. Please - don't agree to cater for a coeliac when you can't - especially when she has made every effort to clarify if she can safely eat at...
Read moreWe ordered 1. Fried Tofu (a vegan option of Fried chicken), 2. Kimchi fried rice(with fried sweet & salty seaweed), 3. Tteokbbokki (spicy cakes) with Kimmalis(fried seaweed glass-noodle) 4. vegan Kimbab plus Hotteok as a desert. A bit a lot for 2 peeps but cannot help trying all of them.
Firstly fried tofu was the best ever, beyond my expectation. Super crispy and soft inside. The sauce has a perfect combination of sweetness and spiciness. Really well-made. Even if you are not a vegetarian, I strongly recommend to taste it, cause you will never have the same food ever. Kimchi fried rice was so tasty as well. Really impressed that the restaurant made a 100% vegan Kimchi, which means you are super safe from the Chinese gross Kimchi.
The owner listened carefully and kindly offered us vegan Kimbab for my boyfriend with all vegetable ingredients which she has. We are so touched. Moreover the taste was awesome with the Kimchi.
Lastly we challenged the most spicy level of Ttekbbokki! 😃 My boyfriend (French-South african, crazy for spicy foods) really love it. The kimmalis were super crispy and tasty as well, with Ttekbbokki sauce.
I took my boyfriend to several Korean restos in Europe, and he said this restaurant was the best. For me, as a Korean, this restaurant made a really home-made foods based on Korean authentic recipes and full of sincerity. We truly hope to...
Read moreArrived in Portugal from Washington DC for the first time on Sunday. We've been venturing around Gaia and Porto trying highly recommended restaurants and local coffee shops. Loved the experience and had some great tasting dishes. It is only Tuesday night and we've reached our limit on local foods already. Too much seafood and too much greasy/oily food in short period of time. We sought out Korean food and came to Ondo. Was a thirty minute walk from our Airbnb in the rain and came in with some hesitation. Boy, am I glad we did. Kimchi jjigae cut right through the greasy upset stomach and brought us back alive. We also ordered Kimchi fried rice, original spicy Korean fried chicken (boneless) and kimbop with a bottle of soju, Cass and makguli. We orded with expectations that we will take home some left overs. I don't think we will be having any left overs... (Look at the last pic). Our server (pink hair lady) and the cook/owner? were fantastic and super friendly as well. Will be back again with our kids before our departure on Saturday and try out rest of their food on the menu. Must try if you are Korean, highly recommend even if you never had Korean food before. I don't think you will be...
