History: Completed in 1739, the church was built in a proto-Baroque style and features a retable by the Italian artist Nicolau Nasoni and a façade of 1932 azulejo tilework. The church is named in honour of the Visigoth, Ildephonsus of Toledo, bishop of Toledo from 657 until his death in 667. Two notable features of the church are the retable and the blue-and-white tiling. The artist and architect Nicolau Nasoni designed the retable, which was created and installed by architect Miguel Francisco da Silva in 1745. Approximately 11,000 azulejo tiles cover the façade of the church, The tiles depict scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso and figurative imagery from the Gospels.

The Church of Saint Ildefonso is really a must when visiting the City of Porto. The beautiful tiled exterior immediately draws the visitor into its ornate interior and exquisite altar. The visit costs one Euro and it’s definitely worth it. We were lucky to have been there when there was music playing adding to the atmosphere. I personally loved it so much that just had to return a second time to purchase a souvenir from the shop where I was well taken care of by a lovely gentleman. I will definitely have to come back next year and take the tour of the museum. Muito obrigado to the staff of the wonderful jewel of a place. Ben Urizar - New York, New York

Igreja de Santo lldelfonzo is an impressive 18th Century Catholic church on the site of a Mediaeval hermitage. Situated on top of a small hill near Batalha Square, the azulejos covered facade captivates you to climb the stairs for a closer look. The many steps leading up to the gated entry provide an interesting foreground for photos, but unfortunately make it difficult to access for handicap and wheelchair bound induviduals ♿️ Even when busy the steps are a peaceful place to rest and people watch. 1 Euro will get you inside to explore. Unfortunately it was not open when we visited.
