We stayed for 3 nights in this guest house. It is basic, clean with great staff and one of the few budget friendly places that offers breakfast also. The location is great; you can walk to almost all attractions (depending on how much you want to walk); and surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants.
The good: The staff is amazing. Every one we met was great and very helpful. The front desk person-Emerson: gave us great guidance on what to see, how to club things to get the most out of our day, where to find good restaurants, etc. We got there sooner than our check in time, and they let us keep our luggage there, offered water etc. -Our room was ready when we got back and our luggage was put in the room Breakfast was simple- coffee, boiled eggs, baked goods, toast, butter, jam, fruit, some meats; freshly squeezed orange juice. The breakfast was handled by the sweetest Iracema and she was amazing. The room was very clean; was as advertised and had everything we needed. The covered balcony gave us the extra space and we enjoyed it. They give you wine as a welcome drink They also offered beer and I am not sure it's a norm; maybe it was done as a special thing-due to the 1st 'not so good' point below.
The not so good: -It was hot the 2 out of 3 nights we were there. When we went to our room after it was ready on Day 1; the room was stuffy and hot. There are no fans and the Air conditioning unit was throwing warm air. On informing front desk we were told that the Air conditioner was broken and it will only be fixed on Monday (2 nights out of 3 nights of our stay). This annoyed us as this should have been something that should have been mentioned when we checked in. We asked can we move to another room and were told there were no other rooms empty. We asked for a fan and they gave us one. They also told us to open the windows as it cools down in the night and that should help- so we did as it very hard to sleep in the room with just the fan. That led to another issue-mosquitoes. We ended up waking in middle of the night and closed the windows. Night 1- we did not get a good night's sleep; we spent it fighting hot stuffy room and/or mosquitoes . On day 2 ( Sunday) I requested again to get the Aric conditioner fixed and told about the mosquito issue. Emerson ( Front Desk) told they me that he getting another repair man to look at it that day. In the evening when we got back and checked we were told that repair man checked and the air conditioner needs a part which they will only get Monday ( I saw no evidence of the repair man being in the room to check but gave them benefit of doubt). We were given a mosquito repellant spray when we mentioned mosquitoes and showed them the mosquito bites .(we never used the spray- we don't like inhaling chemicals ).Night 2 very little sleep again. Day 3 -we went out hoping that when we come back the air conditioning will be fixed as was promised on Day 1 ; but when we got back to the room it was still not fixed. At that point we did not say anything as it was our last night there. Thankfully it rained that day so the weather was little better and we were able to get some sleep. What was most disappointing was that no one even mentioned it on the last evening we got back or at our check out. No sort of refund or anything else was offered. We paid for a room with air conditioning and not having it through out our stay was disappointing and everything told to use felt like lies/excuses. I understand that things break down ; I also know that not all rooms in Europe have air conditioning but we had picked this place for air conditioning. The fact that we were never contacted by the management, offered any sort of refund and this issue was taken so lightly - makes me sad. -The other concern was despite of having "do not disturb" sign on-someone came into our room and cleaned the room trash everyday. I don't know if that is a norm in Portugal ( I did not face it anywhere else in our stay) but I would rather have been told that and would have left the trash...
Read moreWe stayed two nights here while traveling through northern Portugal. The staff were pleasant and accommodating, and although they spoke little English, they made a genuine effort to communicate and were always helpful.
The guesthouse is typical of many older European propertiesâadequate and well-kept, though showing some awkward adaptations of using a building nearly a century old. Our room, though high-ceilinged and ornate, was rather small, with limited space to sit comfortably or unpack luggage. The bed was a comfortable queen size. As in many older places, the bathroom felt a bit improvised, fitted into one end of the room. The shower door leaked quite a bit, and no amount of adjustment seemed to fix the problem. I never understand why issues like that remain unaddressedâitâs a nuisance for guests and likely causes more damage over time.
The wooden staircase and heavy doors were handsome but creaky. Foot traffic, conversations, or television from nearby rooms could be readily heard. Thankfully, things quieted down nicely after 10 p.m. The three flights of stairs would also be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues. I generally prefer these old-world buildings to modern hotels, but they do come with a few trade-offs. This one is no different.
Breakfast, included with the room, was very good, with attentive service and plenty of choices. Freshly squeezed orange juice is a mainstay of Portuguese breakfasts, and the coffee here was acceptable. The dining area was cozy and relaxed, making for a pleasant start to the day.
The guesthouse is close to the city centerâmaybe a bit scruffyâbut the neighborhood remains quiet and leafy. It didnât feel unsafe, and the setting offered a nice mix of convenience and calm. Overall, a comfortable stay with classic charm and the kind of quirks that give travel a...
