Maria Amaro — Restaurant in Setúbal

Home made food. No menu, no board,no listed prices. We sat and were told the 3 choices for the day. We selected pork stew over rice and Bacalao a la brass. Nothing memorable, but good tasting food. Just like at home. There was also a vegetable soup, but we were not informed. Saw anothe another customer eating the soup after our entree was served. It was a chilly day and I really wanted some. So I asked if I could have a small cup. I did get a coffee cup of it and I was happy...untill I saw that I was charged 2,50 eu for it. Outrageous when you consider that a large full bowl costs 1,50 in every other restaurant in Setubal. Maybe it was a mistake. Unfortunately I did not check my receipt untill later that day. If you don't speak Portuguese this may not be the place for you. Although the lady chef was very nice, the server and I had difficulties communicating. My Portuguese is minimal, but generally enough to manage an order and ask a few questions. The place is very small and gets quite busy with the local lunch crowd. Would I eat here again?...

We found this little, hidden gem accidentally and we were so happy that we did! There are small savory and sweet selections and 3 dishes per day, one of which is vegan. Everything is handmade by the lady that runs the place. The place is small with a few tables and has no menu which makes it so unique and differentiate it from other cafes and restaurants. The dishes change everyday and you may see the options of the next day on Instagram. On Saturdays they offer only the smaller options and on Sunday it remains closed. During our stay in Setubal we went there for lunch 3 times. Everything we tried was unbelievably tasty!! We wish that there were more places of the same concept that offer delicious...

In 1 word Outstanding - absolutely love, love, LOVE this restaurant! I was lucky enough to be introduced to this place by a very good friend yesterday at lunch. Setúbal is generally pretty good for eating out but Maria's cuisine is on another level. The freshness/quality of the ingredients, together with the culinary expertise really shine out.
