Dachniki — Restaurant in Palace District

Just a tourist trap. Prefer other places such as "Mama na dache", Brynza or even Evrasia; which has much more russian food than its name suggests.

We go to Dachniki every year, and it's getting worse every time as no effort is made anymore (tourist stream is guaranteed by location and the concept) Food isn't bad, but no more than under-average and overpriced, especially considering that many dishes have no sides. In our case, we were served slowly, so we got dishes, which were already cold. When trying to explain the situation to the manager, she answered that she wouldn't apologise as tourists... ahem... customers are usually happy, and that we should go to other places to have better service.

After ten years of declining quality, we decided to follow manager's advice, and go elsewhere.

Absolutely delicious. This "soviet-style country house cafe" has cozy and interesting decor like a 'Dascha'. They do have english menus, and their choices of food are very wide. They serve quite a variety of traditional favorites. We ended up getting a tea-service complete with a samovar, and everything from caviar and blini, to borsch, sashliki, and even deserts. The prices are lower than I would expect for being right on Nevsky prospect and so close to the palace, dom kinigi, and kazan. If you want a traditional experience, I recommend this place highly. Plus thier menu is so varied you could come back or share with people in your group and still have a wide variety to try. Everything was cooked wonderfully, and the waitstaff (which spoke a little bit of english) were very patient...

Went there by the positive reviews and was really disappointed. After +10 days traveling in Russia I am already used to people speaking little to no English at all, yet the waiter here showed no interest at all to even get our order straight, bring back the menu so we could show her the pictures of the food we wanted and seemed even bothered to have to ‘deal’ with us. She took forever to come back with the food, drinks and the check, which we had to stand up to ask for. The other waiters, the hostess and the supervisor didn’t seem to care that we were being ignored by our waiter either. The food was nothing out of the ordinary. Not a nice experience. I would not recommend, at least...
