In a culinary reality that is often not very exciting as in Bratislava, there are some times you can still get positively surprised. I was invited by some friend to join a Sunday lunch at Dock7. I didn't even knew they opened since I just came back from a 1 month trip abroad.
The service was really good. Attentive, proactive, the waiters were speaking to us in English as soon as they realised we were foreigners. I read the reviews and if they are true, congratulations to the restaurant manager to turn things around so quickly. I have nothing negative to say about the staff. They were accommodating, professionals, smiling.
But what really caught me by surprise was the menu. I was expecting the usual brewery as there are many in Bratislava. And the belonging to the Medusa group is not a badge of confidence for me. I was expecting the usual plates, the usual flavours.
Instead I found a menu that has been created with a bit of inventive and an attempt to introduce elements of fusion with the use of spices and herbs. Next to very classical dishes you can find others that have a twist of intention in offering something a bit more creative a surprising. I also found smart the possibility to order different sizes of portions when it comes to the "Oven and smokehouse" section, to allow customers to try different plates and flavours.
When it come to the food quality I had the Beef Top Blade tandoori and the pork belly asado paired with home made fries (quite a rarity around here) followed by creme brulee.
Beef was really tender. You could cut it without the knife. The tandoori component was a bit underwhelming as I would have expected a bit more enhancement of the spices. Pork was very good quality, well cooked and melting in your mouth, but was lacking a bit of dimension in its taste. No complaints. It was good, but somehow leaving me the wish for something more. In both cases a bit more creativity could have been offered in terms of plating skills to offer a more inviting experience. Home made fries were the only let down of the food I had. They were a bit dry and not particularly good in terms of taste. Finally the creme brulee. To be honest it was a very good dish. I really enjoyed it and could have had a second one. But the name is misleading since it is in no way a creme brulee. Think more of a vanilla mousse/foam. But the texture was really interesting and the taste of hazelnuts and pear was surprising and were bringing dimension to the lightness of the mousse/foam.
The environment is pleasant, modern but not cold. The use of wood bring a warmth that is very nice. I would recommend to stay in the front of the restaurants, since the back expands the volumes and takes away that feeling of cosiness that is attractive. Alternatively if the weather allows it, book a table outside on the terrace overlooking the Danube.
For my described food I spent around 40 euro including a couple of non alcoholic drinks. While not exactly cheap, considering the rise of prices everywhere, the cost is aligned with the trends without being overly expensive. You get up feeling you were not cheated and believing you had a quality meal in a comfortable environment with great service. And nowadays this is something to appreciate.
Thank you for the experience. I will for...
Read moreWe visited this place on Sunday evening around eight o’clock. We ordered wine, malt lemonade, a burger, and grilled trout. The wine was fine, the malt lemonade tasted more like orange lemonade to me, but still good. We didn’t wait long for the food, as the place was empty.
When the food arrived, the trout looked more steamed than grilled, and the cheeseburger was very average considering its price. My wife returned the trout; the manager was very accommodating, which is a big plus, and they said they wouldn’t charge us for it. They brought us the menu so she could choose something instead of the trout. You’d expect that when there’s a complaint about food, they’d keep an eye on us to quickly fix the issue. But that didn’t happen - for a good 15 minutes (in a completely empty place), nobody came to check on us.
When someone finally did, my wife decided to just order a crème brûlée. That brought another surprise - it looked like whipped cream sprinkled with crushed caramel, with some decorative leaf on top. I thought this was the kind of recipe you couldn’t mess up, but I was wrong. I didn’t have the energy to deal with it anymore, so we paid and left.
It’s a beautiful place, maybe I’ll give it another chance just for a beer, but I’d really expect more professionalism, especially...
Read moreWhat can I say... I'm French and I really love good food and meat, particularly. We were here shopping on Sunday and just happened to eat here.
The service was excellent; a very big thank you to our waitress, Dominika. Very patient, helpful with everything, and knowledgeable about the homemade beer, etc.
About the food... I can't understand all the negative reviews; the food was awesome.
The combination was perfect, the salad had the perfect amount of everything, the meat was delicious, and I really want more...
The cheeseburger was also perfect. The cheese was very good and perfectly melted. The potatoes were homemade and very tasty, as was the sauce. The pepper sauce was perfectly spicy and very delicious. The mushroom sauce with bacon was very good too; maybe a bit more salt would make it perfect (just my taste opinion). The cheese sauce was unreasonably tasty, too.
Dessert: The "Crème brûlée" isn't one; it's a homemade remake, but it was tasty, and the combination with a bit of basil made it crazy and unforgettable.
Beer: Nothing to say... a lot of different possibilities; my beer was intensely floral and very tasty. Perfect for my dishes.
So, a big thank you for the food and this unforgettable service and knowledge.
It was a very nice experience. We...
