Sterling reviews which brought me in for a cappuccino and croissant, but beware if you’re a foreigner and cannot speak Slovak….
I walked in this morning and asked the owner who was in conversation with two other individuals at the bar if he spoke English. He said, no, which is understandable as I recognize I’m in Slovakia. I was without coffee and working on little sleep – so I thought it was best that I didn’t try my Slovak to order at the time but I had a feeling he was challenging me on purpose.
I then broke out my very basic Slovak to order myself a cappuccino, and a croissant. The owner said “sit down,” gesturing to the tables. I said, “oh, you do speak English?!” And he said “and you speak Slovak!”
I felt like this situation occurred so that I could be a spectacle for his cronies/locals seated at the bar and that he maybe would not provide service to me or help in any way unless I could order in Slovak.
I could not eat my croissant and drink my cappuccino quickly enough, and felt uncomfortable the whole time I was seated there – which was maybe 10 minutes.
When I went to pay, the owner was being kind all of a sudden, as if I had proven myself for being able to order in Slovak, after making a spectacle of me in front of the other four people in the tiny café. I was so embarrassed.
I didn’t like how he treated me and refused to speak English to me when clearly he was fluent which I could see during our interaction when I went to pay/leave. It was almost as if he wanted to make a joke for his friends at the bar. It’s a shame, because the cafe has a cozy vibe, the coffee was great, and croissant was yummy (like other reviews mention)– but I would be hesitant to enter if you do not speak Slovak well enough to order your own coffee or you will be the next spectacle for the locals!...
Read moreI just love this café! It’s no hipster place with overpriced single origin Ethiopian espresso. It’s a good old Italian cup of strong espresso or capuccino or ristretto. The prices are the best around. There are some comfy chairs under the trees right outside where you can sip your coffee, munch on heavenly croissants and chill. The owner is...
Read moreWe tried quite a few coffee spots in Bratislava, and this one was by far the best. The coffee was excellent! Rich, smooth, and well-balanced. We came back twice just for that. The prices are also surprisingly low. Honestly, we haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else. No hype, no gimmicks. Just really good...
