I’m Nick Hamman, and I’m stepping back in time to 1968—when Fordsburg’s oldest surviving restaurant, the historic Kentucky Milk Bar, first opened its doors at 95 Central Road. Back then, this part of town was known as “the frontline,” a buzzing hub where South Africa’s Indian and Coloured communities came to hang out, catch a movie at nearby cinemas like the Avalon, and grab a bite of proper chow—classic steak sandwiches, toasted rolls, and hotdogs. Went there after reading a review on Instagram about the awesome toasted steak sandwich they offer. They did not disappoint. The shop is full of character and takes you back to a bygone era. It was rather busy with people all sitting around a singe table enjoying their lunch. We ordered the toasted steak, cheese and chips sandwich and it was delicious, filling and definitely something I would go back for.

If you grew up eating slap chips with fish and so on this is a great place for you to try out.

Kentucy milk bar has a history, it has been the place to be back in the day and the only place opened at night when you needed a decent meal.

What Should you try?

A toasted steak special Or Toasted steak and cheese.

With a glass bottle cool drink.

So why the three stars?

While I love the food and it’s value for money. The interior of the shop needs a bit of an upgrade.
