Having spent many years in China I felt a bit nostalgic. So I ordered sweet and sour pork, deep fried wun tun, as well as vegetable, prawn. beef spring rolls
The battered pork itself wasn't too bad, but there was very little of it, and it was served with what I assumed was cheap no name white rice, not the glutinous rice that Chinese food should be served with. The sweet and sour sauce was too sweet and the pineapple was slimy, the combination made me ill. After a few bites I tossed the whole dish.
The deep fried wun tun was awful. The meat inside was tasteless without chives or any seasoning one would expect and certainly not worth the trouble of biting through the overcooked spring roll pastry that was hard and almost impenetrable.
The spring rolls were much larger than I expected, but they were tasteless. The sauce did not save it as it was the same sickly sweet and sour sauce that had ruined my sweet and sour pork. Having learned my lesson, I used my own sweet chilli sauce which made this dish bearable.
In short if you are looking for authentic Chinese food look elsewhere and if you are looking for a decent meal, once again look elsewhere.
What really ticked me off is that the owner of the restaurant is Chinese and I chatted to her in Mandarin as my food was prepared. After eating what I could of the food at home, I have reached the conclusion that the owners are keeping the good food to themselves, and serving the trash to the "laowai", who don't...
Read moreThis is good place for local Chinese takeaways. Food quality is good and the prices are reasonable. Call ahead and get an order number and total. When they're busy (Fri/Sat evenings) it can get a little chaotic and you may end up waiting longer than is reasonable (I've been in queues that go outside of the tiny shop). Outside of the rushes though it's perfectly good and it is popular for a reason. Sweet and sour pork, chicken cashew, and salmon platter sushi are all menu items I often...
Read moreThis establishment is definitely one of Joburg’s best Japanese food restaurants.
We have been supporting this restaurant as a Take-Away since 2019, and always find their ingredients to be fresh and tasty.
The restaurant itself is physically very small with not much atmosphere, but what they lack in atmosphere, they make up plenty-fully in quality cuisine.
Try their Chicken-Corn soup and sushi for a great experience. Their Chow Meins and Chow Faans are...
