Turn 'n Tender Parktown North has been around for quite some time and I am wondering why I haven’t been there sooner. It’s situated on a trendy intersection, with decent parking in the back (I am not one for parallel parking) so its relatively easy access.
If you are lucky enough to meet Guy, the owner, let him take you through what the brand has to offer. I always love it when the Owners and Management are passionate about what they do, as it translates into the food quality, and preparation.
TnT have launched a new Gin menu, and I think they will score high brownie points for us all Gin lovers, and they have a good variety with options so you can have it any way you prefer.
As for the food options, they have such an extensive menu, ranging from the Starters, to mains and right down to desserts, they have more than 5 options so you can imagine, no picky eater will leave there hungry. They do also cater for vegetarians, and have some Chicken options, ( or Ostrich for the health conscious) but I mean come on, it’s a steak house, WE WANT MEAT, and lots of it.
Guy took us through the various cuts of Ribeye (drool) and explained the difference between the cuts as well as grain fed vs free range, which meats produce better flavor vs tenderness.
So getting to our dinner, for starters we ordered a variety to get a taste of all the different flavours. Some will please, others not. I for one, LOVED the Tempura Prawns, the taste and the crunch was just delicious. The Louisana Hot Wings were Yummy, but I think I expected a bit more Kick to it. The Focaccia bread was divine, it wasn’t the usual round thin Pizza like one, but this was more like your deep pan kinda bread, and smothered with some butter, it’s a winner. The Marrow bones, eh, I know it’s a favourite for some, we had the one cooked it its own broth. I personally didn’t think it was the star of the evening, but my fellow foodies indulged. If I had to try it again, I would need some spice to it, or maybe try the other version apparently cooked in wine. The Fried Camembert Cheese with Fig jam, was ooey gooey cheesy and who doesn’t love cheese?
For mains, we could not help ourselves but order the Ribeye, Guy again gave us some good suggestions in terms of what we want to order, one ordered it off the bone, the other with the bone. I ordered mine with a chilli basting – medium -ish ( along with pap and gravy) , where someone else had a pepper crust. As with meat orders, you need to have Onion rings, and TnT do it both ways. Battered, or thin and crispy. The battered ones were flipping fantastic, whereas the thin version was a slight let down.
Another friend decided not to follow the pack and had Ribs, and they were definitely finger licking, (and comes with a BIB, just in case you really get into it.) As far as drinks are concerned, I had my usual Cosmopolitan, which is what I like to judge most restaurants on (that and well Milktart and Carrot cakes if that’s on the dessert menu) They passed wih flying colours, it was spot on.
I must admit, I was defeated by the Ribeye, I just couldn’t finish such a massive piece, and I needed to have space for dessert. All of us needed space. I have been craving chocolate the whole week so I wanted to taste the Chocolate Brownie, my friends ordered the Lemon cheesecake and the Malva pudding. It was an American style brownie, warm, and gives that fuzzy feeling inside, the smell was enough to make you want to eat it.
All I can say is GO. Take a friend, a lover, a partner and go sit and chill and just indulge in some really good food, the shooters are fab (we had the Milktart shotters – Y.U.M.M.Y) and we had great service from Simelezi.
They do have some specials on certain days, even though I can safely say they are quite reasonably priced, and the portion sizes are not stingy. So keep an eye on their facebook page. If you get to meet Guy, tell him I sent you and let him take you through what...
Read moreDisappointing Experience from a Once-Reliable Favorite Sunday Lunch 29 June at 12h00 - Parktown North I’ve been a long-time patron of this restaurant and have consistently enjoyed quality meals here, particularly the rib eye steak, which has always been a standout. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was quite disappointing and left me genuinely concerned about the direction things may be heading.
The calamari starter was uninspiring — lacking in flavor and presentation. It felt rushed and underwhelming, especially considering the standard this restaurant has upheld in the past.
The real letdown, however, was the rib eye steak. It was not properly matured, and instead of the rich, tender cut I’ve come to expect, it was full of tendons and noticeably tough. This is a significant drop in quality from what has always been a reliable dish.
What’s most troubling is the apparent lack of quality control and management oversight on the day. It felt as though the attention to detail and care that once defined this establishment were absent.
I hope this is a one-off incident and not a sign of a broader decline. This restaurant has long been a favorite, and I’d like to see it return to the high standards that earned...
Read moreFirst time customers at this branch. Went for mother's day lunch, appreciate that they could accommodate us without a booking on such a busy day. My wife an I shared the 700g steak with the 2 sides an 2 sauces. My mother chose the 200g fillet. We all were hungry an for some reason the waiter didn't bring our sides, only the steak an our sauce ? I asked her where are our sides an she never came back, asked again an then she brought side plates. At this point I had 3 small pieces of my steak left an told here, you didn't bring our chips an veg "the sides " an I am nearly done with my steak. She totally forgot . I told her she forgot an then she denied it, 20 minutes into a meal with nothing else but meat on our table . This spoilt the outing. She even recommended onion rings to us an then forgot to bring it? Ordered a drink an it took so long that I thought she forgot that as well. The meat was also very chewy, the inner of the medium steak was raw, we even asked for 2 skillets. We did not enjoy our lunch that cost over 1000 rand. Ended up leaving...
