I have had really amazing food and service from various turn and tender restaurants in JHB. I have had some of the best steaks , chicken and starters that were top notch. But this most recent experience was mediocre at best. The waiter , who would usually bring out the various cuts and tell us about specials and recommendations and actually earn his well deserved larger than normal tip, was merely an order taker this last time. First of all, the starters. My girlfriend had the avo ritz. It was tiny and the avo at the bottom was insipid. The teeny prawns did taste good. The orice was almost the same as the steak. My partner's steak was thinly cut and cooked well done. This isnt what was asked for, but I guess cooking something not much thicker than a schnitzel to medium rare is a huge challenge. If they'd brought out the various steaks, we would have seen the state of the sirloin and opted for something else. My starter was the seafood soup. The tomato base had no taste. I kept adding more and more salt and pepper to get something from it. The seafood itself...three tubes of calamari, four muscles, one really nice prawn on top. But all in all, nor worth the hefty price. I think it was R150. Almost the cost of the main course for something mediocre and unappetizing(except the large prawn on top) I had a whole chicken. It was alright. It was honestly very average. The peri peri flavouring had little flavour and was dry. It was far from delicious. It have had far more juicy and flavoursome chicken from the local takeaways. The vegetables, which were the standard butternut and creamed spinach that you literally find at 90% of SA restaurants , like Ocean Basket , Spur, Js diner etc etc made this meal nothing special at all. How about trying a little bit harder. Distinguish yourself from other food outlets by doing other veg every now and then. Cook your meat and chicken like professionals who care about your job, with a bit of love. Maybe the night we went was an off night, but for the price you pay at restaurants nowadays, do I really want to risk spending so much money again at the risk of the same disappointment? Maybe it's time to go back to basics and start learning to cook with love and passion like you're famous for. I have eaten at a few Turn and Tenders , from Parktown North, to Bedfordview, and even in Braamfontein many years ago. I'm sure there's more but I forget now. I have eaten at this particular branch too. It was always a real treat with exceptional service. salesmanship and the beat steaks in JHB. Hopefully this recent visit was just an off night, because I would love to go there again and leave thoroughly impressed like all my visits...

Read moreIf you know Turn 'n Tender, then you'll know their steaks are unbeatable. So there's that. It was my first time at this particular branch. As I'm quite familiar with the brand and what it stands for, I had suitably high expectations. We got there to what seemed like a very busy afternoon. So we basically sat ourselves at a table. The table was a bit sticky. That's never much of an issue because they always wipe it as soon as you take a seat. That didn't happen here. After a minute or two, a friendly waiter greeted us and handed us our menus. Took our drinks orders.
We then ordered our starters. Which were really good.
We then decided to change tables. We got to our new table to find the floor was sticky. Someone probably spilled a drink or something. We reported this to our writer who SA's quite nonchalant about it. We let it go.
When the time for mains came, we placed our orders with great help from the friendly and knowledgeable waiter. Needless to say, the steak at T'nT NEVER disappoints. I had mine with their new charcoal rub and veggies. Highly recommended!
Our waiter suggested a great choice for me for dessert. Which I thoroughly enjoyed, especially as it was well balanced.
I'm hoping the stick table and floor were unfortunate once offs. I'll probably return to this branch, because, the steaks... The sizzling, yummy steaks! But when I do, I will not be as accepting of sticky...
