A Disappointing Decline in Standards at Mugg & Bean Musgrave
I am currently seated at the Mugg & Bean Musgrave branch in Durban (8:54 AM, 6 April 2025), and for the first time in 15 years of frequenting Mugg & Bean outlets across the country, I feel compelled to voice my disappointment publicly.
This morning, the usually pleasant atmosphere — known for its warm music and welcoming ambiance — was disrupted by a fellow patron conducting a loudspeaker phone call, clearly audible throughout the restaurant. After first addressing the matter politely with the patron, I raised the issue with the manager. To my surprise, I was informed that "it’s a business call, and that is allowed."
Really? Since when did business calls on loudspeaker become acceptable practice in a shared dining space?
This logic opens the door to chaos: imagine every table engaged in loudspeaker conversations — personal, business, or otherwise — all at the same time. It would be nothing short of an audio nightmare. Surely common courtesy and consideration for others should be a standard here?
As property managers ourselves, we instruct tenants in shared spaces to use earphones to maintain harmony. Is it unreasonable to expect the same basic courtesy in a restaurant that promotes itself as a space to relax, work, and connect?
I’ve supported Mugg & Bean for over 15 years, but if personal privacy and peace are no longer respected here, perhaps it’s time to settle elsewhere. I did not come here to involuntarily participate in someone else’s business affairs.
I sincerely hope head office re-evaluates what is acceptable in their stores — because if this is the new normal, Mugg & Bean is no longer the brand many of us once...
Read moreI am very disappointed. I ordered the "Right on the Red" drink which is suppose to be "ice blended blueberries, blackcurrant, apple, beetroot & butternut", as stated on their menu. The drink I got was nothing close to this. I was served crushed ice with super sweet blue berry syrup, ONLY. The manager came, I opened the menu and pointed out to him that all the ingredients (blueberries, blackcurrant, apple, beetroot & butternut") as stated in the menu are not in the drink. One would expect these ingredients to be blended with the ice and not just a syrup with ice. He said yes, its all in the super sweet syrup. I politely explained that I can't drink this as I ordered this drink mainly for the betroot. I would not recommend this drink to anyone.
To eat, I ordered Toasted Cheese and Tomato ONLY. This goes for R31.90 with no chips/salad and R49.90 with the chips/salad at all Mug n Beans I've been to in Durban. When the bill came, I was shocked to be charged R49.90 and not R31.90. I asked the lady who was helping us and she said their system does not...
