Update:

A slightly disappointing return. The fish itself was fresh, including a good piece of snoek (hooray for winter). But the oil is clearly old — you can smell the staleness as you come in and it’s particularly evident on the chips. And then batter is a bit soggy — probably the temperature of the oil isn’t high enough.

The best kind of fish shop: hole in the wall style, hand-cut chips, good fresh fish.

A couple of years ago I had the best fried snoek here that I’ve ever had, which for me is the test of a really good fish and chip place. I didn’t get the snoek this time since it’s mid-summer, and the hake wasn’t quite as stand-out, but still...

Through Rooiels, decided we’ll stop in Kleinmond. Quite a few restaurants on the way to the sea front – Kabeljoe’s sounded nice, but a bit pricey for a quick lunch. Spotted a small fish shop just up the road – Fisherman's Take Away - ordered a fishcake and small chips for me, battered hake and chips for Hein Pretorius and 2 pickled onions.

Fabulous fishcake, yum chips, spicy pickled onions and battered fried hake! I always love the end bits of battered fish – when Hein couldn’t finish his fish, I wasn’t interested in the fish, only the crispy outside skin. Delicious! Thought I'd give them a second try because maybe they had an "off day" the first time I tried them. But it was the same again... Very average service (felt like I was being done a massive favour by them cooking me fish and chips.) I bought 5x fish and chips and they were competitively priced with other places in the area, but their portions are practically half the size of some other places in the area.
