⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An unforgettable dining experience at The Greek Fisherman, Sea Point
This restaurant wasn’t our first choice — but wow, it turned out to be the best choice! Our evening couldn’t have gone any better.
I was meeting my cousin and his newlywed wife for lunch in Sea Point, Cape Town. As usual, I had done my research on local spots for good food and drinks. Funny enough, the restaurants we drove past were the exact ones I had read about earlier — yet nothing quite felt right. We decided to park and stroll from place to place, but still couldn’t find the one… until we stumbled upon The Greek Fisherman.
Right at the entrance, we were greeted by Gency, who immediately won us over with his wit, charm, and charisma. Honestly, if it wasn’t for him, we might have walked right past!
As we stepped inside, we were welcomed into a beautiful courtyard centered around a tranquil fountain — cozy, inviting, and full of Mediterranean charm. The atmosphere set the perfect tone for the evening. On offer there were blankets and various heaters which will save you on those chilly nights.
We ordered drinks while browsing the menu, and everything looked fantastic (and very well-priced). We went for some sparkling wine — Gency presented the bottle, poured a tasting first, and then placed it back on ice to chill further. That level of attention to detail and professionalism is rare these days and truly appreciated.
When our food arrived, it looked incredible — and tasted even better. My cousin and I had the Roast Lamb (slow oven-roasted on the bone with lemon roast potatoes and tzatziki), while his wife chose the Grilled Sirloin (served with mushroom sauce, olive oil, lemon, and oregano). The lamb was tender, juicy, and full of flavor — the kind of dish that makes you reach for bread just to soak up every last drop of that sauce.
For dessert, I was hoping for a crème brûlée, but since it wasn’t on the menu, Gency suggested his favorite — the Traditional Baklava (phyllo pastry, nuts, honey syrup, and ice cream). My cousin and I also tried the Feta Cheesecake with Vissino (sour cherry syrup) — something I wouldn’t usually order, but I’m so glad I did. Both desserts were absolutely delicious and beautifully presented.
Throughout the meal, Gency was outstanding — knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the food and the guests’ experience. He kept our glasses filled, offered great recommendations, and made sure we were taken care of from start to finish.
Thank you for an amazing evening, Greek Fisherman — and an even bigger shoutout to Gency for his incredible service. You’ll definitely be...
Read moreThe setting is beautiful. Even though there is a really busy main road behind the restaurant, you feel so secluded and away from the city and or beach life.
However, we wondered in and no one came to seat us. We then had 4 different waiters seat us, take our order, bring our food and remove our plates. That was quite confusing.
We did not wait that long for service as we ate around 17:00 before the rush began but it was longer than normal. We did wait a while for out dessert order to be taken, as if they had forgotten about us.
The food was alright. We had the Chicken and Halloumi Gyros. The pita was thick and flavour was mediocre. We have had much better Greek food at other places and we were let down. Thus it is 1 star compared to what we've had. For dessert, we had the cheesecake and Gelato Duo. Vanilla Gelato was lovely but the chocolate one was almost liquid when we received it. Also, it comes on this lovely looking plate that the Gelato dishes don't fit on. Don't understand. The cheesecake was crumbly and tasted old and stodgy. Not worth the price.
Once we had finished our dessert, we were considering their milkshakes but the bill was brought to us without anyone coming. Also, this was the 5th person so have served us.
Last thing, which was a bit unusual was, when our plates were taken after our main, our waiter said "Wow, you ate so quickly". Firstly, I don't think 20 minutes to eat Gyros and chips would be that quick and also, I don't think you should point out how fast or slow someone eats. Never experienced that before.
We were really excited to visit this place but will not come back nor will we recommend. Go use your money elsewhere as it will be more worthwhile and probably...
Read moreWe ate here recently, the setting is great - cosy little courtyard with a fountain. Nice vibe. Mixed reviews about food, some was very good, some was a bit bland. The reason I'm giving 2 stars is that 3 out of 4 of us were really sick the next day. I wouldn't ever mention this in a review if I wasn't certain, but the three of us that were sick all ate the stuffed calamari which had a strange taste when we ate it. One of the four was ill for several days. Interestingly a different friend went there a couple of weeks later and when I asked how it was, without prompting, he said he had a really good meal but he got food poisoning :( I wish I could say more good things, but I couldn't ever come back here. Please check your stock rotation of meat and sea food, and check that it's being stored / cooked correctly. In response to the owner's reply, very disappointing that they retaliate by suggesting that we don't know the difference between a hangover, and 3 of us having uncontrollable sickness and diarrhoea from both ends. In any case, we didn't order any wine during our meal, but nice try trying to discredit. My original review was factual - and as stated, I wouldn't ever say this in a review if I wasn't absolutely certain (let alone make it up for no reason). Rather than be defensive perhaps you should check that your strict health and safety protocols were being followed that day, during a 40*C heat wave. As you'll no doubt know from your hygiene procedures, even the best quality calamari from the Falklands can be mis-stored, contaminated or incorrectly cooked. Accept some responsibility instead of making up lies about your customers to try...
