Firstly this spot on Dorp street comes across as extremely vibey with the Aparol Spritz drinking crowd loudly lining the sidewalk, but on entering one is greeted with a very old style colonial bar, lined with wood and leather and finished with neatly dressed barmen trying to keep up with the high Aparol Spritz demand. We went the beer route rather .. and the IPA was surprisingly good but not good enough to have two. Another interesting querk about the place is that it is a smoking bar and they have an array of cigars on offer to suit any budget or social status level, and just to get into the vibe, but being there just for a quick drink we opted for the cheapest option on the cigar menu .. but this is were things got interesting and completely off putting.. as it turned out when we needed to leave.. they gave us a much more expensive cigar than what we ordered and just expected us to pay for it in a very sheepish manner. Unfortunately this place will never...
Read moreI recently visited the Blix Tavern bar in Stellenbosch after reading an article about how they are the smallest bar currently in Stellenbosch. They have an outside seating area looking out on the sidewalk and the busy Dorp street, as well as an inside seating area for days when the weather isn't that great. This quaint little bar has everything from their own craft beers (Lager, Weiss, IPA) to cocktails and whiskies. They even had some cigars if you are so inclined. We grabbed a couple of drinks, but could see this bar is aimed towards the more mature markets, as the prices are a bit higher than the average student can afford. Read moreThis is a great little place on Dorp street where you can grab a drink and have a smoke. The staff are impeccably friendly, helpful and enjoyable to engage with. Maxwell is as much a feature of the establishment as the establishment itself. The beers on tap are tasty, the whiskey, wine and brandy selections are fantastic. The cigar and cigarillo options are also extensive. Although it's great to have a Cuban, there is an African cigar called the Bongani that is as delicious as its South American counterparts. Definitely recommend spending some time here to unwind. The prices also ensure that its not crawling with students as their budgets can't typically handle a whole...
