Mukshidonna is conveniently (perhaps too conveniently?!) placed right outside Gyungbokgung Palace and serves enormous steaming shallow pots of tteokbokki, the ubiquitous Korean rice cake/stick. Tteokbokki is also one of my all-time favourite foods. Choose from a style of stew (here is the army base stew, or budge-jjigae), which comes with chunks of fish cake and Vienna sausage. Then go as crazy with the toppings as you want: springy ramyun, hard-boiled eggs, gimmari, dumplings, and cheese. The entire thing is bubbles over and each bite of tteok is just the right amount of chewy and firm, while the stew itself is meaty, salty, and over time becomes thick enough to become the perfect season-turning winter dish.
The staff (to my shocked surprise!) speak near perfect Mandarin, and seemed to prefer Sticking to Mandarin when I spoke in English. A glance around will show you just why: the hordes of Chinese tourists in the restaurant. They’re a little brusque but polite enough. At the end of the meal, about 1/3 of the stew was left and staff persuadingly crossed off the fried rice order, as what we had ordered was perhaps enough for an entire family and two mere individuals weren’t the manpower or...
Read moreMy recent visit was a complete disappointment due to the terrible service and disappointing food. Although some of the staff were able to speak Chinese, they were rude and unhelpful throughout our visit.
We ordered the TTEOK-BOKKI dish, which was listed as Korean Won 16,000 for 2-3 pax and Korean Won 22,000 for 3-4 pax. However, when our dish arrived, we noticed that the portion was exactly the same as the table next to us, who had ordered the 2-3 pax portion. We brought this to the staff's attention, but they dismissed our concern, admitted on the portion both are same with different price and said it was the minimum value we had to spend per head count to control customers.
The portion of the dish was disappointingly small with the higher price, with only one serving of thin noodle for 3-4 pax option. When we complained, the staff suggested that we order more side dishes to supplement the dish's small size. This was dishonest management, in my opinion. If a restaurant charges a higher price for a larger portion, they should deliver on what they promise.
Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant due to the poor service, unappetizing food, and dishonest...
Read moreTried this when we were searching for food around Bukcheon Culture Village. The owner is bunch of friendly ahjummah, be cautios for travellers because they don't speak English. Basically when you got there, there will be a piece of paper on the table. You just need to mark what you want to order. The first part of the menu is the main dish, what kind of noodle and meat in the soup. The second part is some add-ons that you want to add to the dish, it contains thing like odaeng (fish cake) and dokpokki and many more. The third part is some fried stuff, like mandus and kimmari. You can add those thing to your heart contents. In the end of your meal you can add fried rice if you're still feeling empty. They will take the pot and cook fried rice in it. But again you need to ask the ahjummah for it, or they think you don't want fried rice. Just tell them "Bokkeumbap Hana juseyo". The food was great, the seasoning was not under seasoned. Need to try the mandu, dip it for a minute or so and eat it...
