If you’re after an authentic taste of Catalan home cooking in Barcelona, this neighbourhood gem hits the spot. Gelida is a casual, no-frills eatery tucked in the Eixample district, serving up honest, unpretentious food with real character.
We arrived early for lunch to avoid the worst of the queue—yes, it’s almost always busy, which speaks volumes. The menu is written on the chalkboard and features Catalan classics: stews, offal, bacalao, beans and more. The flavour is home-style, the portions generous, and the price pleasantly modest given the location.
The atmosphere is lively and slightly chaotic in the best way: families chatting, locals at the bar, servers moving with purpose. It may not be refined or quiet, but it feels authentic—a true “house of meals” where you come for the food above all. Service was friendly and efficient given how full the room was.
In short: Gelida offers a genuine slice of Catalan culinary culture without pretense. Great value, great flavours, and an experience you won’t get at a polished tourist spot. Arrive with an appetite—and perhaps a little patience...
Read moreAn unspoilt bar and restaurant with some original features. Not too much choice for beers, but simplicity is the key here. Excellent olives. On today's visit I had Galta al forn and have to say, the meat literally fell off the bone. My companion had the entrecote #superb. A lot of the sophisticated restaurants would learn a thing or two from this excellent, or even brilliant value for money establishment (and don't even get me started on the incredibly good and affordable Catalan wine. I've spent a long time in Spain and this is definitely in the top 3 (factor in Granada) value for money. Easily best value for money...
Read moreAfter two weeks in Barcelona with really good experiences, unfortunately my last evening was different. Waiter was unfriendly. Delivered the wrong dish, but I didn‘t send it back. It was a cooked beef with sauce and some fries. It felt like it was heated up in the microwave for too long. The calamari I ordered never came and after I told that to the other waiter she said the kitchen was closed. That was probably 15 mins after I sat down. Students next table playing drinking games and shouting around. A minute later The waiter who took my order started cleaning up the floor with an ugly smelling soap or whatever this was while the restaurant was still half full of people 20 mins before the official closing time at 9:40 pm. Whatever.. feels like they...
