Haven — Restaurant in Bilbao

We stumbled upon Haven as we were staying at a small hotel up the hill, we were close by, and too lazy to head over the river.

And omigod am I glad we did. The pâté de foie, the croquettes, the grilled lubina, the flan, etc. etc. … all clearly homemade. But what made it for me was the pride they take in their Basque Country and its glorious food, both from land and sea.

We had local cider from this fall’s apples, unfiltered and sharp, Basque beer on tap, somewhere between an ale and a lager. But the highlight was the white wine called Uriano, Denominación de Origen Bizkaiko Txakolina, bottled at the vineyard. Tart but not sour, tasting of the salt air and the nearness of the sea, a wine that could only have come from the hills by the Atlantic.

And so much food, so much drink, cost us less than we’d spend at home for a late pub supper after a hockey game.

Some reviews criticized staff for being brusque or gruff or rude. We’re Canadians who speak next-to-no Spanish. We were treated with good humour, care, and thoughtful recommendations. I suspect one’s treatment may reflect one’s own...

Una comida casera muy buena y un trato siempre muy cercano, y sobre todo a unos precios económicos.

Voy tanto a comer el menú del día como a cenar un plato combinado, la comida es casera cómo la que harías en casa con buena calidad de productos y un excelente pan, que aunque mucha gente no aprecia el pan, por mi parte a la hora de comer es una de las cosas que más valoro.

Aprovecho para indicar que ahora que tengo más tiempo me gusta acercarme a su terraza que está en el parque frente al bar, y pedir un sandwich o unas rabas los fines de semana, porque es algo que también hacen muy bueno.

Lamento indicar que no comparto el modelo de negocio que tienen ahora en la terraza, que brindan una carta diferente y que por ejemplo, por una hamburguesa de buey que lleva huevo, bacon y cebolla te cobran 12 euros y no te ponen ni una sola patata frita, ni siquiera una hoja de lechuga con un tomate, nada de nada, y eso me parece un mal detalle y hace excesivamente cara esa hamburguesa.

Por cierto si quieres también te pueden vender algo de embutido recién cortado para casa de una calidad magnífica que doy fe de ello, hablamos de chorizo, salchichón y...
