Really bad experience. If you are visiting (or live in) Bilbao and fancy a bite to eat, keep on walking.
My girlfriend and I visited Bilbao last week as part of a week in the Basque Country and had a awful time at this cafe. Service was painfully slow, over 80 minutes for 2 cocktails, some hummus and 2 vegan burgers. As if that wasn't bad enough, the food was dreadful.
They had run out of burger buns though never bothered telling us and just served us the burger patty between two slices of pretty horrible bread. As we had waited so long for the food, we were famished so decided rather than send it back, we'd have to soldier on. This basically meant ditching the bread as it was barely edible and eating the fairly bland vegan burger on its own.
When it can to pay, the staff member who served us was on break and so we had to wait for them to return before we could settle the massively over priced bill. This was another 10 minutes of just standing there. When the waitress returned, she was quite rude. My girlfriend was also pretty sure they over charged us.
By all accounts it was the worst meal/experience we had on our visit to the Basque Country. There is such amazing food to be had all over Bilbao it really makes no sense for anyone to waste their time and money...
Read moreNice staff, yummy quality and healthy food ! They have the menu in Spanish and English. To eat here or takeaway. I took the 13,50€ menu that contains 6 varied makis + 2 sides (chose hijiki seaweed salad and tomato gazpacho). They have a variety of vegan dishes and snacks such as sandwiches with tofu tempeh or seitan, dips of guacamole hummus etc, drinks including kumbucha and a great selection of Yogi Teas, and dessert of the day. Gazpacho was super creamy and tasty. The makis were made from whole rice 👍🏻 and stuffed with : ensalada, aguacate, sprouted beans and marinated radish, sprouted beans and marinated ginger, bell pepper with I assume a purple hummus, and last but not least tahini and sultans 🤤. Hijiki came with lotus root and sesam seasoning like the wakame salad one. It just would be great to open a bit earlier (currently 1:30 pm). Thanks, nice vegan spot if you...
Read morePromising Concept, Disappointing Execution As someone who loves healthy, plant-based food, I was excited to try La Camelia Vegan Bar while visiting Bilbao. The staff was friendly, and it's great to see a vegan option in a region so focused on meat dishes. Sadly, the experience didn’t live up to the glowing reviews. The menu was fairly limited - for example, there were no bean-based dishes, only one soup, and dips that were overly salty and bland. The salad, even though it had good ingredients, was drowned in dressing and impossible to eat. The one highlight was the bulgogi with mushrooms and quinoa, which was flavorful and well done. As much as I appreciate the concept, I can’t recommend La Camelia to those seeking healthy and satisfying plant-based food. You might be better off at a regular restaurant that includes fresh, healthy options...
