Zaharra - Plaza nueva — Restaurant in Bilbao

A no-stress stop for wine and pintxos: Zaharra is a teeny tiny pintxos bar in the Plaza Nueva. We discovered it on our first evening in Bilbao and it made us feel right at home. They serve a selection of classic, accessible pintxos at very economic prices. Don't let this fool you, as they are good value.

There are several beers and wines to choose from, including the local txakoli: medium dry, young white wines made from grapes of the region.

The big plus for us though, was the warm welcome we got. Don't get me wrong: we don't speak Spanish nor Basque (and their English is limited), but somehow the staff made us feel welcome and at ease. Great location, excellent food and pretty reasonable prices in comparison with the other eateries on the square. The skewered steak was brilliant. But why no 4th or 5th star?

I got the distinct feeling that I was not welcome and felt close to being ignored with 2 customers arriving at the bar to order after me getting served before, the waitress walking off half way through my order and just her general unwelcome demeanour.

Este es un bar que antes me gustaba mucho. Tenía buenos pintxos, había buen ambiente y te atendían correctamente. En base a mis buenas experiencias pasadas (que quedan también reflejas en la opinión pública sobre este local) y una vez más, he acudido hoy a tomar algo.

Sin embargo, hoy me encuentro con que voy a pedir a la barra y sabiendo la camarera que yo estaba esperando para pedir (puesto que me ha visto esperar), ha llegado más tarde que yo una pareja al parecer amiga de la susodicha, y ésta ha empezado a hablar con ellos y les ha atendido antes que a mi, manteniéndome a la espera.

No es sólo el hecho de que haya atendido a sus amigos primero, sino que cuando me ha tocado el turno lo ha hecho con tales prisas que no reflejaba otra cosa que ganas de terminar su trabajo.

Para colmo, cuando nos sentamos a comer en la terraza, se nos acerca lo que parece un empleado (parece puesto que iba en chándal y con la riñonera al cuello) que nos dice que cierran la terraza en 5 minutos. Acto seguido se pone a recoger las mesas y sillas vacías mientras el resto de los clientes siguen comiendo, haciéndonos sentirnos bastante incómodos (por la actitud del resto, me atrevería a decir que a todos los clientes de la terraza).

Puesto que esto no nos había pasado nunca en la vida en este bar, deducimos que probablemente se trate de un cambio de gerencia (o algo similar).
