La Escama — Restaurant in Calvià

The place is nice and I think they did wonders with the location (it’s a large room with a the entrance and terrace facing a street, with no side openings. Making it look spacious and airy but also cozy was not an easy task and they completely succeeded!). The staff are marvellous, everyone was super nice and attentive, extremely fast and very professional. On the food I’m a bit more critical: both fish were of extremely high quality but the sole was a bit soggy, and the veggies it came with were a pile of seemingly boiled vegetables. The mashed potatoes were very good! The cod was firm and tasty, slightly on in the salty side (there are ways to extract it from the coarse salt crust without passing on the saltiness) but great meat. But then… sitting on a bed on plain, unseasoned rice. The same veggies were on the side. A suggestion: stir fry the veggies so they remain crunchy and their flavour is elevated by the butter, which also makes them glimmer in the light. And if you want to leave the steamed rice put it on the side to create more harmony in the plate. For a visual effect (as the cod is white) I would strongly recommend adding even just a pinch...

First thing first, food quality is good. Grilled octopus is very good. Deep fried baby squid is very good. Salmon tartar is very good. Grilled Chicken Skewers is very good but a bit over priced. Prawns in garlic is very good.

However, lobster paella is a bit disappointing. Rice is a bit salty and lobster is not perfectly fresh. At a price of 35€ per person, I expect a certain quality.

Service is very good. Friendly and English-speaking.

Atmosphere is good. New and modern. Just that it is difficult to find parking space. No parking garage nearby. All road side parking spaces are 105% occupied (including illegal parking). To be fair, parking is a big problem for tourists in peak season...

Amazing may fall short for this great experience. Our expectations were close to none, being a new place in a nice location (illetes). So we started and everything seemed to just fit in its right place. Great diverse menu (fish is the king) with an extensive wines list and great service. You may consider that the terrace in front of the street is not the best entry point, but don't judge a book by its cover. Simply give it a try and enjoy.
