Restaurante La Gran Tortuga — Restaurant in Calvià

1 star and a major letdown, mainly due to the chef/owner's attitude and the average quality of the food.

We arrived around 8:15 pm and found only 2 occupied tables, with the rest of the patio empty. We politely asked the maitre d' and waitstaff two times to seat us at one of the tables by the seaside, but they refused, claiming those tables were reserved. We left around 9:15 pm, and the restaurant remained almost empty, with only 2 other tables occupied. When we expressed our disappointment to the chef/owner, he did not even acknowledge our feedback.

The food was mediocre at best: Shrimp salad (6/10) - Mostly mayo with little shrimp flavor Beef tartare (9/10) - The lone highlight, well-made Black rice with prawns (4/10) - Only 2 tiny shrimp pieces, overwhelmed by an excess of butter Seared sea bass (5/10) - Just a simple fillet with French fries, lacking the rich, authentic Spanish seafood flavors we had hoped for.

Magnificent views from Cala Fornells across the coast and out to sea syretching from Perguera to Ilas Malgrats. The evening sunset lights up the coastal cliffs, and as darkness falls, the lights emerge across the water. All very romantic. Its a very interesting menu, and some great surprises. Portions are generous, and we ended up going twice. Of what we ordered, the following were excellent:  the padron peppers, duck fois gras with port jus, marinated sardines with raspberry and cheese, fried anchovies. And the two absolute standouts were Soller grilled prawns, and for dessert the chocolate with oil and salt (omg it was amazing). We just had their house wine which was fine. I had an amazing experience at this restaurant in Mallorca. The location is absolutely stunning, with breathtaking views of the sea and a perfect atmosphere for a relaxing meal. Whether you’re enjoying a sunset dinner or a quiet afternoon lunch, the scenery alone makes it worth visiting.

Beyond the beautiful setting, the hospitality was outstanding. The owner was incredibly kind and welcoming, making sure we felt at home throughout our visit. What impressed me the most was their generosity—when my phone ran out of battery, they went out of their way to help me call a taxi, which was a lifesaver.
