At first glance, the restaurant looked quite nice. I called earlier to book a table for two around sundown (9 PM), and when we arrived, I told the woman at the entrance that we had a reservation. She just nodded and pointed us into the restaurant without saying anything. Once inside, we had no idea where to go. We had booked a table on the rooftop and expected someone to direct us there. After speaking to another girl working there, she also just pointed us toward the stairs (something I could’ve figured out myself) but honestly, I just expected someone to show us to our seats.
Once on the rooftop, I found an empty table with a “Reserved” sign and assumed it was ours. Luckily, it was, but it would’ve been nicer if someone had shown us directly instead of later coming over to ask for our name to confirm the booking while we were already seated.
When we sat down, we were given food menus but not any drink menus. That in itself isn’t a big issue, but it became one since the waitstaff weren’t actively checking in on us. Throughout the night, it was hard to get anyone’s attention. We waited long periods just to ask simple questions or order drinks, which made the service feel inattentive and, frankly, lazy.
The service overall felt very bare minimum. Small things added up, like no ice in the glass, dirty rooftop windows, no help with seating, and long waits for any interaction with staff.
When we finally ordered, the food came quickly, which was nice. The food itself was okay, not bad, but nothing special either. We both had pasta dishes (carbonara and bolognese), and while edible, they weren’t particularly memorable. Personally, I’ve had better carbonara at cheaper and friendlier places.
Up until this point, I wouldn’t say the experience was terrible—just lacking in attention and energy. But then, about an hour after we arrived (around 10 PM), a new waiter appeared. He was extremely loud, very fast-paced, and dominated the rooftop area. He came to clear our plates at lightning speed, asking how the food was while already grabbing them mid-sentence. I responded in Spanish asking for the check, and he interrupted with a laughing “You mean the check?” in English, before quickly asking where we were from and running off without listening to our response.
This completely changed the vibe of the evening. I was enjoying myself up to that point, but he stressed everything up with his rushed and overbearing behavior. I speak Spanish quite well, and I prefer to use it when I can, especially in Spain. It felt rude to immediately switch to English just because I don’t look local. If I wanted to speak English, I would’ve done so from the start.
To top it off, he never brought the check, and I had to flag down another waitress. After a long wait, the check finally arrived, and I paid quickly since my girlfriend was freezing and we just wanted to leave. Only afterward did I notice they had charged us for two portions of olive oil bread we never received. It was just €4, so I didn’t bother going through the hassle of getting a refund.
As we were leaving, the same loud waiter started shouting after us, asking “Was it good? Did you like it? Thanks!” over and over again. I gave him a thumbs up and a polite smile, but he kept repeating himself loudly as if I couldn’t hear him (which I obviously could).
The service was bare minimum overall, and that one waiter really stressed us out with his chaotic energy. The food was mid, and the atmosphere was decent before he arrived, but by the end, we just wanted to get...
Read moreThis restaurant looked outstanding and is beautifully set up, especially with the nice roof terrace. The service though... First of all we did not order our main course, because we left before placing an order at all. A move i do not like and have never done in my life.
There was plenty of staff. A Barkeeper, three waiters and seemingly a supervisor and non of them seemed to leave for the othere floors, where other waiters worked. Still it was just frustrating. The supervisor came to our table around 4 times, always making a gesture of remembering that we existed at all, then he went to get someone to take our order. Again and again. Once we got him to awnser a question, but he made clear that he doesn't take orders... Okay their hierarchy and organization, accepted. In between we got a waiter to take an order. We were able to order drinks, but as soon as we asked a simple question about the grill platter for 2 (wether french fries are included or not) he was puzzled and ran away for help. I don't blame anybody for not speaking english, even though it is a touristic area, that was not the biggest deal. Our drinks... never arrived. only a bottle of water was placed, which could have been an apology, something on the house or a mistaken order. We did not know because there was no explanation and the waitress was gone quicker than speedy Gonzalez. In the end we were just frustrated, because tables that arrived after us had given their orders and we still waited for the drinks. We ordered cocktails, so i would understand longer waiting times, but at the bar we saw 4 staff members chatting with what looked like a friend of the house, while customers still waited... As I'm working in a restaurant myself, i do understand certain things, but the amound of tables they served (and failed) as a team of 5, i could have handled myself (and i actually did). Reading other people's bad reviews about the food doesn't shock me. Not...
Read moreWARNING: This place will try to scam you! Casa Roja runs an elaborate con and the whole staff is in on it to some degree. First, they throw bread on your plate which they will charge you for unless you tell them to take it away immediately. This would be par for the course with Spanish restaurants, nothing to write home about, but sadly the garlic bread is the tip of the scam iceberg at Casa Roja. After adding our individual charges, we realized we were overcharged nearly 30% on our final bill. It works because the wait staff force you to pay inside, where everything is busy and you are constantly being jostled around and asked to hurry up by the owner. Then while you pay, he offers you free shots and fist bumps all around (??). To add to the confusion, he mentions free cocktails upstairs. Weird but nice right? We didn't take him up on that, and instead stood nearby trying to figure out why our bill was so high. This visibly bothered the owner, but instead of talking to us inside where other customers could see, he waited until we left and then followed us outside, where he gave a really genuine sounding spiel about how much he cares about his business and how it was an honest mistake. He convinced us he only overcharged us by €10 and gave us that amount back with a performative apology, but that was only a fourth of what his business actually grifted off of us. And if you think like we did that this might have been a one time mistake, go read other one-star reviews. The Casa Roja Gang have been skimming the tops of tourist wallets for at least five years at this point. I can't decide if I'm angry or just impressed. You guys really put the artist in the con! Thanks for the underwhelming...
