We've learned to not to trust reviews as genuine but what can you do. We looked for highly rated places in the area. Chose the neighbouring restaurant, but it was full and chose "Los 5 Sentidos" which looked cozy, also had good reviews, and had a free table for two. Great. 2 minutes the waitress told us. 20 minutes later she was able to put some plates on the table and let us sit down. Fair enough. After an additional very long time we were presented with a couple of pieces of bread, with their "homemade special butter", portioned in the size of a small coin. If there was any taste in it it was too skimpy to even notice with the bread. We got some red wine which was decent. Then another long wait. Finally we got to order! The menu looked inviting, we were really hungry. I asked for some recommendations and was told the "veal beef cheek" is always good. My wife got the "oriental noodles salad". Then the wait, again. Ages. The water came around and said "we have to get the beef cheek just right!". Ok. In the end, of course, we got food. The "veal beef cheek" was one of the saddest meals I've had to look upon for a long time. Some mash lacking flavour, and some non-descriptive meat cooked long enough to completely kill all texture and flavour, drenched in a brown slimy sauce, which brought back memories from the canteen in primary school. Oh, and some strips of carrot on the side. But, the noodle salad by wife got was actually quite good. Then we wanted desert, which meant another great pause in our lives. I had the "lemon pie" (since again the waitress though it was "particular") and my wife gourmet coffee with "miniature deserts". The "lemon pie" arrived 20 minutes later, and it turned out to be literally a big pile of some lemon curd, in the middle of a plate, with literally a couple of crushed cookies spread around it. That was the "pie". It didn't feel like raw lemon curd with crumbles so I had to leave it complete. My wife's desert was a tad bit better, but also bad. The coffee we had was also not good. In the end the wine was ok and the noodle sallad was good, everything else ranged from bad to a joke. We probably spent around 2.5 hours there for a late lunch, including around 30 minutes actually eating lunch. The remaining two hours was waiting. Even getting the bill took ages. But by then this was...
Read moreI'm sorry to say I was quite disappointed, because I was looking forward to having dinner here.
We started with the cheese lollipops, which I didn't really enjoy, even though I am a huge cheese lover. The foie gras was tasty, but was served with spiced bread, a really strange combination that didn't work for me.
The Iberian pork was alright, but the mustard sauce too sweet. The highest expectations I had was for the veal beef cheek, but the chef had forgotten to add salt. We asked the friendly waitress for salt and she confirmed the chef makes this dish with very few salt and lots of guests ask for salt. Such a shame and strange choice from the chef and unfortunately our dish was cold by the time we received the salt.
The chocolate dessert was very dense and one dimensional in taste. The deconstructed lemon pie was disappointing. It was simply some lemon custard with a little bit of meringue and a ton of broken cookies on the side. Not a balanced dish at all.
What also didn't help was the very loud French gentleman at the table next to us. He was the only one in the restaurant who was extremely loud and it was impossible to ignore his loud story telling. Later that evening I learned he is the owner of the restaurant, which really blew my mind. How can you behave like that and disturb your own guests like that?
I most certainly will not come back or recommend this restaurant to anyone.
If you do decide to go, make sure to wear something warm: it's really cold in the restaurant because all doors are wide open. Probably nice in Summer, but in January...
Read moreOh.My.Freakin.God!!! By far the best restaurant I had the privilige to visit during my weeklong stay on Gran Canaria, and I mean not only Las Palmas but the whole island. First of all, the waiter was so kind that even though they were fully booked, he got me a table despite I arrived alone and that's rarely the best business for a restaurant during rush hours. I ordered the Lollipops for starters which were amazing, but the star of the show was the caramellized octopus with sweet potato purée and mango sauce, which is easily the greatest, most delicious and most special octopus dish I have ever had. Bad thing is that from now on, this is the bar all octopus dishes will have to tackle, I already pity them. As for a light dessert, I asked for a half portion cheese platter as the Canarias are famous of their local cheese and it did not disappoint either, as all the 4 cheese types were awesome, accompanied by a delicious fig jam, grapes and dried figs. The prices are very reasonable especially looking at this almost fine dining quality the dishes have. If you want to make the biggest mistake of your culinary decisions on Gran Canaria, please don't come anywhere near Los 5 Sentidos and start crying for the rest of your miserable life due to what you have...
