No photos - I am a shambles of a reviewer.
But don't let my lack of focus distract from an excellent restaurant!
This was one of those serendipitous Google Maps finds as we had to navigate back to the Grand Via from the Reina Sofia. Zoom, scroll, nope, maybe, nope.. Ooh, 4.6 and the pics look good. Let's try there.
We turned up around 8pm and there was a small queue outside - a good sign! Front of house guy was great, explained that we'd have to wait a bit but he'd seat us as soon as possible. Ten minutes later we were led downstairs to their cool cellar-cum-dining room. Cosy, character, and cool art on the walls.
I'm not gonna lie, service was a bit chaotic. I finally got the 2nd glass of wine I asked for AFTER I'd finished my cheese and Iberian ham plates. However, both wine and food were great, and excellent value for money.
In fairness, our waiter was a friendly, lovely guy. Just a bit ran off his feet.
I had a third plate - the Ropa Vieja (Cuban style shredded beef). It came with a surprise - proper hand cut home-made chips (crisps). They were every bit as good as the beef - I'd happily order a plate of these alone!
Special mention to the vermouth (vermut) which Mrs W had a glass of to finish her meal. It was FABULOUS. Best we had in Madrid (and we tried a few). Incredibly complex and exceptionally drinkable. Really, really delicious and a must try if you find yourself in El Sur de Moratin.
All in all, a great meal in a...
Read moreOne of our new favorite spots in Madrid is El Sur de Moratín, a restaurant that beautifully blends classic Spanish tapas and traditional dishes with Cuban influences. This unique fusion makes for an unforgettable dining experience.
We visited on a Monday evening, and despite it being the start of the week, the place was nearly full—always a great sign! We ordered three dishes: Pimientos de Padrón, Paella, and Ropa Vieja. And let me tell you, that Ropa Vieja was hands down one of the most delicious things I’ve eaten in a long time. We originally ordered a small portion, but after finishing it, we just had to get another. This dish is now living rent-free in my mind, and I know I’ll be craving it for a long time.
The wine at El Sur de Moratín is also excellent—the quality is outstanding, and the amount they pour for the price is incredibly generous. It’s the perfect pairing with the flavorful dishes.
The service was attentive and welcoming, adding to the overall great experience. But seriously, if you go, do yourself a favor and order the Ropa Vieja—you...
Read moreWe are massive fans of Mas Al Sur and were so happy to discover this new restaurant which is part of the group! Jonny and his staff are honestly the best, most professional and friendly waiters in Madrid. It's my absolute favourite restaurant to take visitors and for a date night. The food is consistently good, a lovely vibe and friendly faces. The wine is so cheap and SO good. Our go to order for two is: Risotto de gambones Ropa Vieja media plato Moussaka Brochetas de salmón media (If you are feeling extra hungry go for the pollo al curry and gambas al ajillo!)
Cheesecake is to die for.
This new restaurant is bigger than the other ones, beautifully decorated with three dining areas. Including a basement area with exposed brick walls would be perfect for private events. Congratulations to Jonny and his partner on another...
