Restaurante El Refugio — Restaurant in Nerja

Fantastic restaurant in the heart of Nerja. We arrived with 3 adults and 2 young children and we were instantly made to feel welcome. The service was quick and attentive offering great advice and recommendations. We had Gambas Pil-Pil, French onion soup and fried anchovies for starters and it was all superb. For mains we had fantastic entrecot steaks, cooked to medium rare as specified, with a choice of sauce, perfect baked potatoes or chips and we also had tender pork tenderloin. All accompanied by a deliciously fresh salad bar with loads of choice. The wine was delicious and compliemented the food very well. The kids menus are great. Lovely selection of food for them to choose with funny names. My kids wolfed down their food. The service is attentive, kind and hilarious. My kids loved the waiter/owner who they decided to call Olaf. He made our, and the kids', evening a very memorable family outing and one that we can't wait to repeat. Allergies- Would recommend this place to anybody but especially to people with allergies. We are a family and our son has milk, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts allergies, I sent a mail before hand and they answered very quickly and recommended me dishes he could have, on the day we confirmed my son allergies and he had the ribs with fries, which were absolutely delicious. It is always difficult to find dishes for my son so this place was a great find, they do take allergies seriously. We had an amazing dinner, the rest of us don’t have allergies but we always worry about our youngest and it was such a relief to see him enjoying his food as much as we enjoyed ours. I loved my chicken in mushroom sauce. On top of that the staff is very friendly and polite and the owners very welcoming, they have such a kind gesture towards us that we have only experienced once before in all our dining experiences, which are plenty. We loved the general feel and ambience of this place. Great seating arrangements and decent size entrance with ample space to move while eating. We were allowed to read our own books while eating and the waiters were supreme and kind. Excellent starters that included Manchego cheese tartlets and baked avocado in a rich creamy buttery sauce with small splashings of piping hot cheese. One of our friends was getting tucked into massive slabs of meaty ribs and beetroot ,while 6 of our other friends were enjoying the chicken fillets in a wine and gherkin sauce. Our group leader who knows good restaurants like a true connoisseur enjoyed the lamb,venison and pork hot roast plus the creamy buns. The wines were local and great.
