Wapa Tapa offers ‘al fresco’ dining off a menu created by chef Adrian Leared. Formerly ran by Adrian and Carlos, it has this year been handed over to the Michaels. For the record, 2025 is our 11th year eating at this (still) fantastic tapas house - you are right to think we know this place well.

Let’s start by welcoming the Michaels and Louisa to the team, as always everyone made us feel extremely welcome.

Inevitably, when new management takes over, there will be changes. Suffice to say that we would not hesitate to recommend Wapa Tapa to any discerning gourmet visiting Yumbo (reservation is strongly advised), the food remains fantastic, the prices are within the range we have come to expect, so what’s not to like? Well, here’s what we did not like:

  1. wet wipes - this is big no no for us, we enjoy our finger licking, but please it reminded us of KFC - do consider returning back to the old environment friendly hot water bowl

  2. presentation used to be a little better, for example, the beef medallion was served with a grilled cherry tomato on top of a wooden board, now we get it on a pretty regular clay dish (pictured)

  3. the Portuguese style cod croquetes were served very oily on two separate occasions - they are not being sufficiently drained, and in our opinion they could use a wedge of lemon

And here is why we still think this is the best eatery (2025) in Yumbo:

  1. while we do miss Carlos’ flare and flair (who wouldn’t!) the Michaels were outstanding hosts, leaving no stone unturned to accommodate our every request (I like my king prawns with more rock salt, no problem!)

  2. Osni’s talent as a barista continues to grow and please us every year - this is where you want to go for a nice cocktail after a meal, fabulous sangria too

  3. the place is bigger yet again - we enjoyed a wider selection of sitting places and the end of indoors dining - well done team, great work with the renovations

  4. but of course, we come here first and foremost for the food. There have been minor changes to the menu (we do miss the cheese board trio selection in the cold tapas), but most changes are very welcome, particularly the original Italian ice cream trio as a dessert (yum)

If you’re still reading this, here are our top 3 tapas in 2025 from Wapa Taoa:

GOLD MEDAL: The Hake Fillet, remarkably well cooked (on at least 3 occasions) with a crispy skin, served with a simply divine smoky sauce (pictured).

SILVER MEDAL: Grilled Acorn-fed Iberian Pork Presa, a very close contender for the first place, it is likely Adrian’s best creation, and deserves its place as the second best tapa (pictured)

BRONZE MEDAL: Uruguayan Prime Beef Medallion, if you’re a meat lover this is gustative delight, tenderness heaven, served with mash and caramelised onions (pictured)

HONOURABLE MENTION: King Prawns, for the more savvy Gran Canaria tourist, this is where culinary dark arts present you with the best prawn tapa in Gran Canaria (pictured) - we do want more rock salt on it though.

Book, visit, enjoy - your taste buds...

What can I say except that this place was INCREDIBLE 😁 We had both had here on our 'to do' list for holidays and when we were on the plane over the person we were sitting beside recommended it so we knew it must be good! I would say to book through the website a few days in advance because we firstly tried to book on the same day and they were booked up! I was so happy to get confirmation of our booking and the staff messaged us back asking if it was our first time which I thought was a lovely personal touch :) when we arrived we were given such a warm and friendly welcome by a lovely gentleman and I'm so sorry I didn't get his name but I think he was one of the owners, he was brilliant and really made us feel so welcome!! The food...what can I say?! Came out quickly and just delicious, so many flavours and textures, I don't have much experience of tapas but I could feel that it was special 💕 I loved the padron peppers and the native potatoes with the spicy sauce, could eat a bucketful of them! We also had the lamb cutlets and the iberico pork which had a delicious asian style sauce - i have to say that the recommendation of 3-4 tapas each for a couple is spot on as we were both delightfully stuffed at the end :) we had some lemon cello at the end of our meal and were given a little coin token of our visit too :) very very reasonable prices for the quality of food! Honestly I would recommend this place forever and a day and if we ever return to Gran Can this will be top of our list!! If you are coming over I'll just say GO GO GO!! Thanks so much Wapa Tapa!! P.S the garlic aioli that came with the bread was incredible too need...

I've been coming here for years and always book well in advance. Looking forward to seeing Carlos and the gang i was disappointed to see the restaurant had been sold earlier in the year. Gone was the prosecco on arrival and the amazing specials. These are now on the menu which is on a tablet but they aren't listed separately so aren't really specials.

I have my go to favourites and its clear changes to the quality of the ingredients have also been reduced. The black pudding with the quails egg was really spicy and had a lot of filler making it up, the chicken skewers lacked the coconut and were very dry, the lamb cutlets were overdone and you only got 2, the scallops were raw in their shell rather than cooked, the pork belly which always melted in your mouth was chewy which also shows the attention to detail in the kitchen isn't there.

The food also came out quickly and with a few dishes at once so we were in, ordered and finished within 45 mins. Again it was always nice to relax and enjoy the food at a slower pace.

For me it was a disappointment. After this being my favourite place to eat here for many years, it wont be on my must do list any longer.

I understand new management will want to make changes but the changes are to the detriment of the experience.

Although my friends who has never been enjoyed it, I left extremely disappointed which was a shame but im glad they enjoyed it.

This was an amazing place to eat and the staff serving are great as always but I wont hurry to book it for any...

My three advice for Wapa Tapa: (1) book early as it is open only a few days a week for a few hours and it is always reserved; (2) be ready to stay there a while, order 7-8 (we ordered 11 haha) dishes as they won't all come out at the same time and enjoy a jug of sangria; (3) talk to the manager or employees as they will tell you about where to food comes from, the story of Wapa Tapa. The customer service was great and lovely to speak to the manager as he let us know the food comes locally and helps other businesses flourish whilst they do the same. The food here was great. A few recommended: Acorn-fed Iberian Ham Bruschetta, Canarian Wrinkled Potatoes (you can tell they are Canarian as they are small black potatoes) and Baked Goat’s Cheese. Those three, yum! This place has got heart, soul and love. That I love.
